During a trip to England, automotive designer Bill Mitchell caught a glimpse of a Rolls Royce emerging from the fog. Inspired by the vision, he began designing what would become the Silver Arrow I. He attempted to marry the sporting character of an Italian Ferrari to the luxury look of a British Rolls Royce.

He thought of it as a Cadillac, a rebirth of the division’s LaSalle. But when Cadillac turned it down, he offered it to GM’s other divisions and Buick won the competition. It evolved almost intact into the first production Riviera.

Mitchell’s customization of this 1963 Riviera converted into a show vehicle, which he enjoyed driving regularly. Among other modifications, its roof was lowered more than two inches and its special interior was trimmed in silver leather. source
