BaT Auction: 1968 Porsche 912 Targa

This 1968 Porsche 912 Targa is said to have spent time in California, New Mexico, Florida, and Maine before it was acquired by the seller in 2018. The car is finished in black over a matching leatherette interior, and power comes from a replacement flat-four that was rebuilt with a big-bore kit in 2018 and is paired with a five-speed manual transaxle. Additional equipment includes twin Solex carburetors with aluminum filters as well as an electric fuel pump. This 912 Targa is offered with partial service records, a service manual, and transferrable Maine registration.

Delivered from the factory in Irish Green (6806), the car is said to have undergone bodywork including replacement of the floor pans before a repaint in black was performed under previous ownership. Bubbles and chips can be seen up close in the gallery below, which also contains photos of the removable roof panel.

Trim includes a brushed stainless steel Targa bar, chrome “sugar scoop” headlamp rings, and rear bumperettes. Factory 15″ steel wheels were powder-coated silver, show 1968 date stamps, and feature chrome hubcaps and Continental ContiProContact tires with 2010 date codes. New brakes were reportedly installed under previous ownership.

The cabin is trimmed in black leatherette with salt-and-pepper carpeting and aluminum strips on the dash, which houses an older Sony cassette player. An aftermarket thermometer is mounted to the left of the ignition switch.

A four-spoke steering wheel frames a five-gauge VDO instrument cluster with a 120-mph speedometer, a central tachometer, and a five-digit odometer showing just under 92k miles. Total chassis mileage is unknown.

The replacement flat-four was reportedly sourced from a 1969 model under previous ownership, and was rebuilt in 2018 with new big-bore cylinders and pistons as well as machining of the cylinder head and valves. The twin Solex carburetors were reportedly overhauled by 356 Carburetor Rescue of Sedona, Arizona under previous ownership and are capped by aluminum air filters. In addition to the engine rebuild, an electric fuel pump and new carburetor gaskets were installed by Briggs Automotive of Lincolnville, Maine in 2018.

Power is sent to the rear wheels via a five-speed manual transaxle. Additional photos are provided in the gallery below to show the floors, exhaust system, and other underbody equipment.
