BaT Auction: 1972 MG MGB GT at No Reserve

This 1972 MGB GT was refurbished prior to 2014 and was purchased by the seller on BaT in July 2017. The car is finished in blue over gray vinyl, and power is supplied by a 1.8-liter inline-four with twin SU carburetors and backed by a rebuilt four-speed manual transmission with overdrive. Work in July 2020 included a carburetor service, a valve adjustment, and an oil change. This MGB coupe is now offered at no reserve with service records, workshop manuals, spare parts, and a clean California title in the seller’s name.

Pininfarina styled the fixed-roof, hatchback update of the MGB, which was launched in 1965. This example is finished in Mineral Blue (BU-9) and is said to have been painted during a refurbishment that was performed before the previous owner’s acquisition in 2014, during which the side-marker lights were removed and their holes were filled. Other modifications included fitting a later MGB front grille, removing the bumper overriders, and moving the license-plate mount below the rear bumper. The seller notes various paint chips, and the hatch is said to have a fitment issue along the bottom on the driver side.

Minator Minilite-style 14×6″ wheels are fitted with 175/70 Bridgestone Insignia SE tires that show 2007 date codes. Window tint was applied to the rear glass during previous ownership.

The cabin has been reupholstered in gray vinyl contrasted by blue piping. Interior modifications include a battery box repurposed as a hidden compartment under the rear seat bottom, a console-mounted drink holder, and an audio system that uses a modern head unit and four 6×9″ speakers. The heater valve and cable were reportedly replaced in June 2020.

A wood-rimmed Tourist Trophy steering wheel frames Smiths instrumentation that includes a 7k-rpm tachometer and a 120-mph speedometer. The five-digit odometer indicates just under 45k miles, more than 3k of which were added by the seller. True mileage is unknown.

The 1.8-liter inline-four features twin SU carburetors and is paired with a four-speed manual transmission with overdrive. An engine oil change, valve adjustment, battery replacement, and carburetor adjustment were reportedly carried out in July 2020. Work performed in 2015 included fitment of a rebuilt transmission by On the Road Again Classics of Morgan Hill, California, along with the replacement of the clutch, slave cylinder, and engine and transmission mounts. At that time the flywheel was resurfaced and the front and rear main seals, timing chain, and alternator were replaced. Invoices for the 2015 work are provided in the photo gallery below.

The rear springs were replaced and a tube-shock conversion carried out in 2015, and around the same time the rear differential was rebuilt with new bearings and seals, and the fuel tank, fuel pump, and sender were replaced. Additional underside images are presented below.

Workshop manuals are included in the sale, as are a removed factory steering wheel and bumper overriders.

The videos above and below show the car being driven.
