BaT Auction: 1985 Toyota Corolla II 1.5 SR at No Reserve

This 1985 Toyota Corolla II is a Japanese-market, right-hand drive hatchback that was acquired by the selling dealer and imported to the US in 2019. The car is finished in blue with silver lower cladding over a blue and gray cloth interior and is powered by a 1.5-liter inline-four paired with a five-speed manual transaxle. Features include twin variable-venturi carburetors, 14″ alloy wheels, a hatch-mounted wing, air conditioning, an aftermarket stereo system, and red rubber floor mats. The timing belt was replaced in 2002, and an August 2019 service reportedly included an oil change and replacing the fuel filter, the spark plugs and plug wires, and the distributor cap and rotor. This Corolla II shows 125k kilometers (~78k miles) and is now offered at no reserve with factory literature, service records, import documents, a tool kit, and a clean Florida title.

The Corolla II was sold as the 2nd generation Tercel in the US, and this example is finished in blue with silver lower cladding. Features include integrated fog lights, aftermarket rain guards, a hatch-mounted rear spoiler, and a rear window wiper. The seller notes that imperfections on the rear spoiler, the right door, the bumpers, and parts of the lower cladding were repaired and repainted. The windshield trim and window wiper arms were also refinished. Close-up photos of the body panels, trim, and lenses can be viewed in the gallery.

14″ fan-blade alloy wheels wear 175/60 Dunlop Enasave EC203 tires showing 2017 date codes. Gouges are present on the left-front wheel. The car is equipped with four-wheel independent suspension, and braking is from front discs and rear drums.

The right-hand-drive cabin features gray two-tone door panels, a gray dashboard, and matching carpets, while the seats are upholstered in gray and blue plaid cloth with blue trim. Amenities include air conditioning, a digital clock, red rubber floor mats, an AM radio, a cassette player, and rear-deck-mounted speakers. Noted flaws include cracks and missing mounts on the rear parcel shelf, a sagging headliner, and deterioration of the sun visors.

The three-spoke steering wheel fronts a 170-km/h speedometer, an 8k-rpm tachometer, and gauges for fuel level and coolant temperature. The six-digit odometer shows 125k kilometers (~78k miles), approximately 200 of which were added by the selling dealer. The speedometer is said to bounce at lower speeds.

The longitudinally mounted 1.5L 3A-SU inline-four features twin variable-venturi carburetors and drives the front wheels through a five-speed manual transaxle. A sticker on the radiator support indicates that the timing belt was changed in 2002 at 98k kilometers (~61k miles), and service in August 2019 reportedly included an oil change and replacing the fuel filter, the spark plugs and plug wires, and the distributor cap and rotor. The lower air intake boot is torn, and the selling dealer notes an exhaust leak, a rough idle at startup, exhaust smoke when the engine is cold, intermittent idle surging at operating temperature, and periodic stalling while stopped.

Corrosion is noted around the jack-point pinch welds and rear hatch hinges. Additional underside photos can be viewed in the gallery.

Factory literature, service records, and import documents are included in the sale. A narrated walk-around video, including start-up and driving footage, is provided below.
