BaT Auction: 5k-Mile 2003 Mercedes-Benz Unimog U500

This 2003 Mercedes-Benz Unimog U500 is one of a small number of North American-market versions that were distributed through Freightliner dealers from 2002 through 2007. This short-wheelbase example was originally delivered to Pennsylvania, and was acquired by its current owner in California in early 2019. A camouflage vinyl wrap has been applied over the orange paintwork, and the single cab features three-abreast seating with multi-colored cloth upholstery. Power is provided by a 6.4-liter turbodiesel inline-six mated to an eight-speed pre-selector manual transmission, a selectable transfer case, and portal axles. Additional equipment includes a three-way tilting bed, custom rollover bar, spare tire mount, and hydraulic winch. This Unimog shows 5k miles and is offered in California by the seller on behalf of its current owner with a clean Pennsylvania title.

The truck features a 132″ wheelbase and a three-way dump box, and has been fitted with a custom box-mounted cage, a spare wheel mount, supplemental LED lighting, a Federal signal siren, and a Blue Sea Systems fuse block for the additional accessories. The carbon fiber composite cab wears orange paint under its carbon-hued camouflage vinyl wrap. The original color is visible under the hood and on the chassis.

Black wheels measure 20″ in diameter and incorporate a central inflation system for the 365/85 Michelin X tires. A hydraulic winch is mounted to the front bumper, and other equipment includes a single polished fuel tank, LED taillights, and a selection of functional front and rear hydraulic and pneumatic hookups.

The single cab features three-abreast seating with multi-colored cloth upholstery and black rubber floor coverings. The semi-floating center console houses controls for the triple locking differentials, range selectors, cutoffs, pneumatic emergency brake, power windows, and more. A single-DIN Pioneer stereo is installed overhead. The truck received a new air conditioning compressor, high-pressure line, seals, and R134a refrigerant in 2016.

Instrumentation includes a 75-mph speedometer, a 3k-rpm tachometer, a quartet of auxiliary gauges, and a pair of digital displays for other vehicle functions. Approximately 5k miles are shown on the digital odometer, 400 of which were added by the current owner.

The 6.4-liter OM906LA turbodiesel inline-six was factory-rated at 280 horsepower at 2,200 rpm, with 800 lb-ft of torque available from 1,200-1,600 rpm. A scheduled B Service in 2016 included installation of new fuel and hydraulic system filters and three 12-volt batteries as well as greasing of chassis fittings and an oil change. An exhaust leak was also repaired.

Power is sent to all four wheels via an automated pre-selector manual transmission, a two-speed transfer case, and portal axles. The truck has a 3,000:1 crawl ratio, permitting it to crawl at a minimum speed of 0.09 mph at approximately 2,000 rpm. A new hydraulic cylinder and associated hardware for actuating the crawler gear were fitted in 2016. Corrosion is noted on unpainted underbody surfaces, additional photos of which are shown in the gallery.

The August 2020 Carfax report shows no accidents or other damage in Pennsylvania from new through its last update in 2013. A technical specification document detailing vehicle features is provided below. The seller notes that the truck cannot be legally registered in California in its current form due to changes in California Air Resources Board regulations.
