BaT Auction: 13k-Mile 1998 Ferrari F355 Challenge

This 1998 Ferrari F355 is one of 108 Challenge models produced and was acquired by the seller in April 2010. The car has reportedly been used for high-performance driving events since new and is powered by a 3.5-liter quad-cam V8 paired with a six-speed manual transaxle. It is finished in red over a black interior equipped with red OMP racing seats, and additional features include a carbon fiber rear wing, a roll cage, a Cool Shirt driver cooling system, Traqmate GPS data and video recording system, Brembo brakes, and 18″ Speedline wheels. An engine-out belt service was performed in August 2015, and the car was serviced following the last track event at Watkins Glen in September 2018. This F355 Challenge now shows 13k miles and is offered in Coraopolis, Pennsylvania on a bill of sale with service records, two sets of spare wheels, a May 2020 track inspection, and a clean Carfax report.

The 1998 model year of the F355 Challenge included conversion to race car specifications at the factory, as apposed to earlier examples which were converted at dealerships. Pininfarina-styled bodywork is finished in red and features a factory carbon fiber wing, black mesh rear grille, tow hooks, black side mirrors, and vinyl graphics. Brake ducting replaces fog light provisions in the front bumper, and the finish and trim are pictured up close in the gallery below. The windshield wipers and retractable headlights do not operate on Challenge variants.

Black 18″ Speedline magnesium-alloy wheels are mounted with Pirelli P Zero racing slicks. Challenge cars feature solid suspension bushings and competition springs, as well as Brembo racing brake calipers over 14″ slotted two-piece rotors. An October 2018 service by Independent Ferrari Service of South Easton, Massachusetts included replacing the front brake pads and flushing the brake fluid. A walk-around tour of the exterior is viewable above.

The cabin features black upholstery covering the door panels, dash, and center console, along with red OMP racing seats. The factory OMP roll cage is mounted to exposed floor pans and features side protection bars and foam padding. Additional safety equipment includes Sabelt racing harnesses, a fire suppression system, and a battery cut-off switch located on the center console. A Cool Shirt driver cooling system has been added, as has as a Traqmate GPS data acquisition and video recording system.

An OMP suede steering wheel frames factory instrumentation including a 200-mph speedometer, a 10k-rpm tachometer, an analog clock, and gauges for oil pressure, coolant temperature, fuel level, and oil temperature. A Spa Technique programable shift light is located on the steering column and the six-speed gated shifter is equipped with a custom billet reverse lockout plate. The six-digit odometer shows just over 13k miles, approximately 5k of which were added by the current owner since 2010. An interior tour can be viewed above.

The mid-mounted 3.5-liter dry-sump V8 features a Bosch Motronic ignition system, five valves per cylinder, and dual overhead camshafts. An engine-out belt service was completed in August 2015 by Independent Ferrari Service, along with fitment of a replacement clutch, air-flow meter, and fuel filter. An oil change and coolant flush were performed in October 2018, and additional work over the last decade is outlined on receipts provided in the gallery along with a track inspection from May 2020.

Power is sent to the rear wheels through a six-speed manual transaxle that was rebuilt by Independent Ferrari Service in December 2010. The gear oil was also changed during the October 2018 service. Additional underbody photos are included in the gallery below showing the belly pans, suspension arms, and quad-exit exhaust system.

Two sets of additional Speedline magnesium-alloy wheels are included in the sale and are mounted with Pirelli racing slicks for both dry and wet conditions. The seller notes that one of the dry slicks is flat.

The September 2020 Carfax report shows no accidents or other damage and indicates history in California and Pennsylvania through its most recent entry in February 2019. A drive by clip is attached below.
