BaT Auction: 1972 Volvo 1800ES

This 1972 Volvo 1800ES was sold to the original owners in Thousand Oaks, California and acquired in 2016 by the seller who relocated it to New York. The car is finished in a green over tan vinyl and powered by a carbureted 2.0-liter B20 inline-four pared with a four-speed manual transmission with overdrive. The carburetors are said to have been rebuilt and tuned, and modifications include a Kenwood head unit, a Rockford Fosgate amplifier, and JL Audio speakers. This 1800ES shows 92k miles is offered with a purchase agreement from 1973, manufacturer’s literature, service records, and transferable a New York registration in the seller’s name.

The car was originally finished in Blue/Green Ocean Mist (109) and a color change to metallic green was reportedly carried out by a Maaco location in California during previous ownership. Exterior features include chrome bumpers and trim, dual side mirrors, and a heated glass rear window. The factory paint can be seen in photos of the door jambs in the gallery below, and the left rear corner lens is cracked.

Steel 15″ wheels wear dented chrome trim rings and are wrapped in 195/65 Bridgestone Insignia SE 200 tires. Disc brakes are equipped at all four corners.

The cabin is upholstered in tan vinyl with matching door panels and carpeting, which is offset by a black dashboard and center console. Amenities include three-point seat belts for the front occupants and lap belts for the rear along with a heater, a Kenwood head unit with Bluetooth, a Rockford Fosgate amplifier, and JL Audio speakers.

A three-spoke steering wheel frames a woodgrain dash panel that houses Smiths instrumentation consisting of a tachometer, a 120-mph speedometer, and auxiliary gauges. The six-digit odometer shows 92k miles, of which approximately 100 have been added by the seller.

The 2.0-liter B20 inline-four features dual Mikuni HSR carburetors that are topped with K&N air filters. The seller reports that the carburetors were rebuilt and tuned during previous ownership.

Power is sent to the rear wheels through a four-speed manual transmission with a Laycock de Normanville overdrive. Additional photos of the underbody are provided in the gallery below.
