BaT Auction: 540-Powered 1967 Chevrolet Corvette Convertible 6-Speed

This 1967 Chevrolet Corvette convertible is powered by a Merlin 540ci big-block V8 paired with a Richmond Gear six-speed manual transmission, and it is finished in Marina Blue over black leather. Other modifications include three two-barrel carburetors, 3″ side exhaust pipes, Torq Thrust–style 15″ wheels, upgraded suspension and braking components, and a modern radio. The car was modified during previous ownership and was acquired by the seller in 2018. Since that time the braking components reportedly have been renewed, the trailing arms and half shafts rebuilt, and the carburetors refurbished. This big-block C2 is now offered with a color-matched hardtop and a clean Arizona title in the seller’s name.

The exterior was reportedly refinished in its factory shade of Marina Blue (976) during previous ownership. Features include a stinger hood with black accents and “540” badging as well as side-exit exhaust, factory chrome trim, and split bumpers. The black convertible top is shown raised and lowered, and a color-keyed hardtop is included in the sale.

Torq Thrust–style 15″ wheels wear simulated three-ear knockoffs and are mounted with 205/70 BFGoodrich Radial T/A tires. Braking is carried out by four-wheel discs that are said to have been upgraded using stainless-steel sleeved calipers and fitted with replacement Delco rotors, rubber brake hoses, and a master cylinder during the seller’s ownership. Suspension modifications include QA1 rear shocks, a Vette Brakes & Products 330-pound rear spring, and adjustable strut rods.

The interior is trimmed in black leather with chrome trim and was reupholstered during previous ownership, according to the seller. Equipment includes a heater, a tilt steering column, power-assisted steering, and Chevrolet-branded rubber floor mats. The seller states that the vertically mounted modern radio in the center stack is currently inoperable.

A factory woodgrain steering wheel frames instrumentation including a 7k-rpm tachometer, a 160-mph speedometer, and supplementary gauges. The five-digit odometer shows 25k miles, approximately 500 of which have been added by the seller; true mileage is unknown. The gauges were reportedly refurbished during prior ownership, although the speedometer is currently inoperable.

The factory V8 has been superseded by a Merlin 540ci big-block V8 with a short block that was sourced from Bill Mitchell Hard Core Racing Products. The engine uses Chevrolet aluminum cylinder heads, a hydraulic roller camshaft, roller rockers, a three-piece Comp Cams timing-chain cover, an ATI Super Damper, and a Moroso seven-quart oil pan. The V8 breathes through three Holley two-barrel carburetors mounted on a Winters cast-aluminum intake manifold, and tubular exhaust headers connect to 3″ side pipes. Work performed since 2018 is said to have included rebuilding the carburetors, changing the engine oil, and flushing the coolant.

Power is sent to the rear wheels through a Richmond Gear six-speed manual transmission matched with a Lakewood bellhousing, a Centerforce clutch kit, and a Hayes aluminum flywheel. During the seller’s ownership, the rear trailing arms and half shafts were rebuilt using heavy-duty U-joints. The seller notes corrosion on the frame and other underside surfaces as well as oil seepage from the engine and transmission.
