BaT Auction: Modified 1968 Oldsmobile Vista Cruiser

This 1968 Oldsmobile Vista Cruiser is powered by a 400ci Rocket V8 mated to a TH400 three-speed automatic transmission. The original owner reportedly kept the car until around 2005, and the previous owner modified it with front bucket seats, a center console and floor-mounted shifter, and white upholstery, modeling the car after a contemporary 442. The refurbishment was completed in 2016, and the car was purchased out of Massachusetts in 2017 by the seller, who subsequently refreshed the suspension and added cruise control. Finished in green with woodgrain exterior trim, this 442-tribute Vista Cruiser is now offered with a clean Mississippi title in the seller’s name.

The exterior was repainted in a color intended to match the previous owner’s Jade Gold 1968 Oldsmobile 442. The car features added 442 badging, chrome bumpers and accents, and woodgrain trim on the lower body panels and the tailgate. The white roof features additional windows for rear passengers. The seller notes that the roof glass is cloudy around the edges, and a close-up photo of a hairline crack in the top glass is provided in the gallery below.

Factory 14″ SSI wheels are wrapped in 225/70 Cooper Cobra Radial G/T tires. This example is equipped with power steering and power brakes, and the seller had the suspension refreshed in 2019 with replacement springs, shocks, control-arm bushings, tie-rod ends, sway-bar bushings, and more. Further details are provided in service invoices and correspondence pictured in the gallery.

The interior was reupholstered in white with a matching white headliner over black carpeting. Front bucket seats were installed along with a center console to match the 442, and the column shifter was replaced with a three-speed floor shifter. Interior features include air conditioning that has been converted to R134 refrigerant, a Pioneer CD stereo, power windows and locks, power rear glass, and seller-added cruise-control functionality with a column-mounted control stalk. The seller notes that the power locks are currently inoperable and that the lower driver-side vent needs to be reconnected.

A woodgrain sport steering wheel fronts factory instrumentation including a 120-mph speedometer and a fuel gauge. An aftermarket gauge cluster has been added below the dash, and the five-digit odometer displays just under 10k miles, approximately 1k of which have been added by the seller. True mileage is unknown.

Black carpeting and white trim is carried through to the cargo area, which features underfloor storage compartments.

The 400ci Rocket V8 was reportedly rebuilt under previous ownership, and power is sent to the rear wheels via a TH400 three-speed automatic transmission that is also said to have been refreshed by the previous owner.

Additional photos of the underside are presented in the gallery below. The Fisher trim tag indicates that the car was originally finished in Burgundy and Provincial White over a Garnet interior.
