This 1959 Porsche 356A was built as Convertible D model and has been modified in the style of a Speedster. The build was reportedly initiated during the late 1990s and included installing the dash/windshield area and soft top frame from a donor Speedster. A louvered engine lid and “beehive” taillights were also fitted, and the car was painted in 2006. The project then stalled for years until the previous owner commissioned Metalkraft Coachwerkes of Cincinnati to finish it in 2019. Power is provided by a 1.6-liter Super 90 flat-four equipped with twin Solex carburetors and mated to a four-speed transaxle. Additional equipment includes Speedster-style seats, lap belts, a Hella rear license plate light, and Speedster exterior trim. The seller purchased the car in May 2020 and subsequently had the oil changed and valves adjusted. This 356 is now offered with a driver’s manual, reproduction tool roll, spare Lemmerz wheel, two framed Speedster pictures, and a clean Ohio title in the name of the seller’s business.
The seller states that the body was modified in the late 1990s, including swapping in the cowl/dash from a donor pre-A Speedster. The rear panel was also altered to accommodate “beehive” taillights, and a louvered engine lid was added in addition to a lower, Speedster-style windscreen and doors without rollup windows. The car was refinished in black in 2006, and assembly was reportedly completed in 2019 by Metalkraft Coachwerkes of Cincinnati, Ohio.
The car has been modified with Speedster-style side trim and badging, and it is not equipped with an exterior sideview mirror. The soft top frame was also sourced from the donor Speedster and has been fitted with a black cover. A set of side curtains are included in the sale and can be seen in the gallery.
15″ polished alloy wide-five wheels are wrapped in 165-width Michelin XZX tires that were installed in 2020, and the spare is a 1959-dated Lemmerz wheel with a matching Michelin tire. Braking is handled by four-wheel drums, and the seller states that the master cylinder, wheel cylinders, brake shoes, soft hoses, and hard lines were all replaced in 2019.
The cockpit features Speedster-style bucket seats upholstered in black, as well as black door panels, a black dash, and salt-and-pepper squareweave carpets. Black lap belts are fitted, and the dash features a keyed ignition and starter button.
The white, two-spoke steering wheel frames green-letter instrumentation, consisting of a 120-mph VDO speedometer and a 6k-rpm VDO tachometer, as well as a Stork oil temperature gauge that reads in both Celsius and Fahrenheit. The five-digit odometer shows just under 4k miles, approximately 1,800 of which have been added by the seller in 2020.
The 1,582cc flat-four (serial number *805529*) was built for use in a 1962 356B Super 90 and is equipped with twin Solex carburetors topped by Knecht air cleaners. The seller states that the oil and filter were changed and the valves were adjusted during his ownership.
Power is sent to the rear wheels through a four-speed manual transaxle. Additional underside photos are provided in the gallery.
