BaT Auction: 1960 Mercedes-Benz 190SL at No Reserve

This 1960 Mercedes-Benz 190SL is said to have spent time in California before being exported to Italy in the early 1990s. The car was returned to the US during previous ownership and was acquired by the selling dealer in May 2020. It is finished in black over a white leather interior and features a black folding soft top. Power comes from a numbers-matching 1.9L inline-four paired with a four-speed manual gearbox. Recent maintenance included replacing the valve cover gasket and tachometer cable, rebuilding the fuel pump and brake master cylinder, and reconditioning the door locks, window mechanisms, and hood latch. This 190SL is now offered by the selling dealer with a clean Washington title.

The body is finished in black (DB40) and features aluminum doors, an aluminum hood, an aluminum deck lid, and a replacement black convertible soft top. Paint chips around panel edges as well as pitting on the windshield trim are visible. The hood and door latches were reconditioned in 2020.

13″ steel wheels wear polished and paint-matched hubcaps and 6.40/7.25-13 Michelin whitewall tires. Factory equipment includes double-wishbone front suspension, rear swing axles with coil springs, and power-assisted drum brakes. Maintenance performed by Coachwerks Restoration in British Columbia, Canada, in 2020 included rebuilding the brake master cylinder and replacing the wheel cylinders, brake fluid reservoir, and steering stabilizer shock.

The interior is trimmed in white leather with matching door panels, tan carpets, and black rubber floor mats in the front. Equipment includes a dash-mounted rear-view mirror, a VDO clock mounted to the glove box door, and a Becker Europa push-button four-band radio. Service in 2020 included reconditioning the shifter housing and bushings, along with repairs to the windshield wipers, windows mechanisms and handles, door locks, steering wheel, horn, turn signal switch, and trunk lock. The fuse box, lighter, and reverse light switch were also replaced.

The ivory steering wheel fronts VDO instrumentation consisting of a 210-km/h speedometer, a 7k-rpm tachometer, and gauges for oil pressure, coolant temperature, and fuel level. A replacement tachometer drive cable was installed in 2020. The five-digit odometer shows 91k kilometers (~57k miles), and true mileage is unknown.

The 1.9-liter SOHC M121 inline-four was factory rated at 104 horsepower and features twin Weber 40 DCOE two-barrel carburetors. Service work completed by Coachwerks Restoration in 2020 included rebuilding the fuel pump, cadmium plating of underhood pipe fittings, and the replacement of the valve cover gasket, hose clamps, and fittings.

The engine stamp reads 121.921-10-016520, which matches the engine number noted on the included factory build sheet.

Power is sent to the rear wheels through a four-speed manual transmission. Additional underside photos are provided in the gallery.

A copy of the build sheet lists factory equipment and identification numbers, and it shows a build date of March 7, 1960.
