BaT Auction: 1969 Mercedes-Benz 280SE 4-Speed

This 1969 Mercedes-Benz 280SE is finished in Papyrus White over a blue interior and is powered by a fuel-injected 2.8-liter inline-six mated to a four-speed manual transmission. Equipment includes chrome bumpers, color-matched wheel covers, wood trim, and more. The car reportedly remained with its original owner in California prior to the current owner’s recent acquisition. Work in the last 50 miles is said to have consisted of replacing the ignition distributor points and performing an oil change. This W108 is now offered on dealer consignment with factory manuals, a stamped maintenance booklet, a data card, and a clean California title.

The body is finished in Papyrus White (717) and is equipped with US-spec lighting as well as chrome bumpers, beltline moldings, and window trim. The seller notes evidence of repairs in the right rocker panel and states that the hood, left quarter panel, right lower quarter panel, and rockers have been repainted.

Factory 14″ steel wheels feature color-matched covers with Mercedes-Benz logos and are wrapped in Michelin Defender tires. Braking is handled by four-wheel discs.

The seats and side panels are upholstered in blue MB-Tex with a matching dashboard and carpets. Wood trim adorns the dash, and this example was optioned without a radio or sunroof. The air conditioning and clock are inoperable, and wear is noted on the driver’s heelpad.

A two-spoke steering wheel fronts a 160-mph speedometer and auxiliary gauges for coolant temperature, fuel level, and oil pressure. The five-digit odometer shows just over 31k, though true mileage is unknown.

The 2.8-liter inline-six features Bosch fuel injection and sends power to the rear wheels through a four-speed manual transmission. The ignition distributor points are said to have been replaced in the last 50 miles, and an oil change was carried out. The engine mounts are in need of replacement per the seller.

Corrosion stains are noted on the lower front cross member, and additional photos of the underbody, suspension, and exhaust are viewable below.

The data plate lists the following information:

  • 717 – Papyrus White
  • 427 – Power steering and manual transmission with floor shift
  • 491 – US version
  • 503 – Outside rearview left mirror

Factory manuals, a stamped maintenance booklet, and a data card are included in the sale.
