BaT Auction: 1974 Alfa Romeo Montreal

This 1974 Alfa Romeo Montreal was acquired by the seller in partnership with a friend in 1990 and disassembled for a restoration, which later stalled when the friend fell ill. The car was sold to its current owner in 2007, and the refurbishment was subsequently completed in the early 2010s. The car was refinished in red over a black interior, and power comes from a 2.6-liter V8 paired with a five-speed manual transmission and a limited-slip differential. This Montreal is offered by the seller on behalf of its current owner in Canada with a manual, a factory steering wheel, a period eight-track stereo, refurbishment photos, spare parts, car show paraphernalia, and British Columbia registration in the owner’s name.

The Montreal was designed by Marcello Gandini at Bertone and unveiled as a concept car at Expo ’67 in Montreal, Quebec. The production model debuted at the 1970 Geneva Motor Show, and 3,925 examples were built between 1971 and 1975. Delivered from the factory in orange, this car was stripped to bare metal before receiving bodywork and a repaint in red under current ownership. Details include a NACA duct on the hood, six slats stacked vertically behind each side window, and heated rear glass. The headlight covers can be seen retracted in the gallery below.

Turbine-style 14″ Campagnolo magnesium wheels are mounted with BFGoodrich Radial T/A tires. A matching spare wheel is included in the sale. The Montreal’s suspension was based on that of the contemporary GTV and featured a double-wishbone setup with coil springs up front as well as a live axle at the rear. Braking is handled by discs at all four corners.

The interior was retrimmed in black leather with red piping and cloth seat inserts, reportedly by Pacific Auto Trim of Vancouver, British Columbia. Amenities include power windows, rear luggage straps, a radio delete plate atop the center stack, and a black leather cargo cover. A period Audiovox eight-track stereo is included in the sale and can be seen in the gallery. The shifter bezel is held down with screws.

A Nardi steering wheel with an Alfa Romeo horn button frames Jaeger instrumentation consisting of a 260-km/h speedometer and a 9k-rpm tachometer as well as gauges for fuel level, amperage, water temperature, and oil pressure. Just over 29k kilometers (~18k miles) are shown on the five-digit odometer, 5k kilometers of which have been added under current ownership.

The 2.6-liter, 90-degree V8 features dry-sump lubrication and SPICA mechanical fuel injection, and was factory-rated at 197 horsepower and 173 lb-ft of torque. A rebuild in 2010 is said to have included replacement of the main and crankshaft bearings, piston rings, gaskets, and both fuel pumps. An oil change was performed in October 2020.

Power is sent to the rear wheels via a ZF five-speed manual transmission with a dogleg shift pattern and a factory limited-slip differential.

Photos taken during the 2010s bodywork can be seen in the gallery along with the included owner’s manual, spare parts, and show paraphernalia. A cold-start video is viewable below along with exterior and interior walkaround footage.
