BaT Auction: 1978 Porsche 911SC Targa at No Reserve

This 1978 Porsche 911SC Targa is finished in Grand Prix White over a black interior and is powered by a 3.0-liter flat-six paired with a five-speed manual transaxle. Equipment includes a black Targa panel, 16″ Fuchs wheels, fog lights, sport seats with striped cloth inserts, air conditioning, and a Blaupunkt head unit. The car was sold from Porsche Scottsdale in Arizona and has been serviced by the seller’s shop since 1986. It was later acquired by the seller in February 2020, and an engine-out service in September 2020 consisted of a new timing chain tensioner kit, clutch, spark plugs, A/C compressor, rear shocks, and tires. This 911SC Targa now shows 107k miles and is offered at no reserve with service records, owner’s manuals, a tool kit, and a clean Arizona title in the seller’s name.

The car is finished in Grand Prix White, and the seller describes evidence of prior paintwork. Equipment includes a black Targa panel, fog lights, driver and passenger side mirrors, and a rear window defroster.

Fuchs 16″ alloy wheels with black-painted centers were fitted with Continental ExtremeContact Sport tires in September 2020, and new rear Bilstein B6 performance shocks were also fitted at that time. Braking is handled by four wheel discs.

The interior is trimmed in black with a matching dash, door panels, and carpets. Equipment includes sport seats with striped pattern cloth inserts, power windows, and a Blaupunkt cassette stereo. The air conditioning system was overhauled in September 2020 with a new York 206 compressor, expansion valve, receiver/dryer, belt, and a recharge of R12 refrigerant.

The leather-wrapped MOMO steering wheel frames a centrally-mounted 7k-rpm tachometer and a 150-mph speedometer, along with gauges for fuel level and oil level, temperature, and pressure. The six-digit odometer shows just under 107k miles.

The air-cooled 3.0L flat-six was factory-rated at 180 horsepower and 175 lb-ft of torque. An engine-out service was performed in September 2020 by the seller’s shop, Beck’s European of Scottsdale, Arizona, and the work included a valve adjustment, leakdown test, and installation of the following:

  • Updated oil-fed timing chain tensioner kit
  • #8 main bearing flange
  • New clutch
  • Bosch WR-8-DC+ spark plugs
  • Engine and transaxle mounts
  • Air duct and hoses
  • Oil lines
  • Rear crankshaft and flywheel seals

Power is sent to the rear wheels through a Type 915 five-speed manual transaxle. The underside of the vehicle was Cryo-blasted during the service, and a receipt from the work is viewable in the gallery, along with additional photos of the brakes, suspension, and exhaust.

Owner’s manuals are included in the sale, along with a tool kit and service records. A cold-start video is provided below.
