BaT Auction: Single-Family-Owned 1973 Ferrari Dino 246 GTS

This 1973 Ferrari Dino 246 GTS was sold new in Denver by Le Mans Motors to a race car driver and collector from Colorado Springs. Finished in Argento Auteuil Metallizzato over blue leather, the car is powered by a mid-mounted 2.4-liter V6 mated to a five-speed manual transaxle. Additional features include a black removable targa panel, power windows, air conditioning, a Blaupunkt AM/FM radio, and Cromodora wheels. The carburetors were rebuilt in 1996, and the cooling and fuel systems were serviced in 2014. Chassis 05514 now shows just under 11k miles and is owned by the son of the original owner. It is now offered on dealer consignment in Emeryville, California, with a tool kit, jack, handwritten service log, copies of original sales paperwork, owner’s manuals, service records, and a clean Colorado title.

The Pininfarina-designed body is finished in Argento Auteuil Metallizzato (106-E-1) and features side vents, split chrome bumpers, and a black removable targa panel. An antenna was added to the left-rear fender during a radio installation in 1975, and the passenger door was refinished in 1995. The selling dealer notes a variation in the color of the door and inconsistencies in the texture of the paint on the hood. Closeups of the finish, trim, and lenses are provided in the gallery below, and a walk-around video can be viewed here.

14×6.5” Cromodora wheels wear Dino center caps and Michelin MXV4 tires sized 205/70. US-market lighting features recessed front turn signals, rectangular side markers, and rear reflectors flanking the license plate. Double wishbone suspension incorporates anti-roll bars front and rear, and braking is provided by vacuum-assisted vented discs all around.

The cabin features blue leather upholstery covering the seats, door panels, and rear panel, along with blue carpeting and black trim on the garnish rails, sills, and center console. Amenities include power windows and air conditioning, and a Blaupunkt AM/FM radio was installed in 1975 by Western Motor Works of Denver, Colorado. The driver’s seat shows foam compression and separation of the lower inside bolster seams. The dash retains its “mouse fur” trim, and a blemish is noted above the instrument cluster.

A leather-wrapped MOMO steering wheel frames Veglia Borletti instrumentation, including a 170-mph speedometer, 10k-rpm speedometer, and clock, along with gauges for oil pressure, oil temperature, coolant temperature, fuel level, and amperage. The five-digit odometer shows just under 11k miles.

The mid-mounted 2.4-liter Tipo 135CS V6 features dual overhead camshafts on each cylinder bank and triple Weber carburetors. Factory-rated output was 192 horsepower and 166 lb-ft of torque, which is sent to the rear wheels through a five-speed manual transaxle. The carburetors were rebuilt in 1996, and some of the work is depicted in gallery photos. A February 2014 service at 10k miles included replacing coolant hoses and fuel lines, flushing the fuel tank and cooling system, and replacing the fluids.

Serial number *05514* can be seen on the chassis stamping in the engine compartment.

Additional underside photos are viewable in the gallery below, showing the belly pan, independent suspension, and exhaust system.

Included in the sale are a set of owner’s manuals in a leather portfolio, a Ferrari warranty card and chassis service manual abstract, the original sales contract, previous registration cards, a tool kit and jack, and a handwritten maintenance log covering 1980 to 2019. A driving video is presented below.
