BaT Auction: 1971 Alfa Romeo GTV 2.0L

This 1971 Alfa Romeo GTV was acquired by the seller in 2017 from its second owner as a project, after which cosmetic and mechanical refurbishment was completed. During prior ownership the body was refinished in light gray metallic, and the seller reupholstered the black interior, replaced the wood trim on the dashboard, and installed a rebuilt 2.0-liter DOHC inline-four mated to its five-speed manual transmission. Modifications include RJR camshafts, a balanced crankshaft, Weber carburetors, high-compression pistons, MaXpeeding connecting rods, 123ignition Bluetooth ignition, and Centerline International headers, as well as Rota 15″ wheels, Centerline International springs, and Koni shocks. Recent service included resurfacing the flywheel and adjustment of the timing and carburetors. This GTV is now offered with documentation from its refurbishment and a clean Michigan title in the seller’s name.

During prior ownership the car was stripped and rust repair was performed on the rockers, front fenders, and part of the floor, after which it was refinished in light grey metallic. Additional rust behind the front fascia was repaired during current ownership, and the seller notes a chip in the windshield, a dent in the left windshield surround, and dimming of the right tail and brake lights.

Silver-finished 15″ Panasport-style Rota wheels wear Maxxis Victra VR-1 tires, and a steel spare wheel with a Firestone tire is stored in the trunk. The car is equipped with four-wheel disc brakes, and the suspension is modified with Centerline International springs and Koni shocks.

The interior was refurbished in black with replacement seat covers, carpeting, and a reproduction dashboard from Classic Alfa, along with hand-cut mahogany veneer on the dashboard and center console. Equipment include stainless door sills, crank windows, a polished wood shift knob, and a heater. The seller notes two tears in the factory headliner, one above the left door and another on the C-pillar.

Hooded instrumentation consists of a tachometer with an integrated oil-pressure gauge as well as a 140-mph speedometer. Additional gauges for fuel level and coolant temperature are located above the shifter. The five-digit odometer shows under 94k miles, with true mileage unknown.

The car’s factory 1,750cc inline-four was reportedly removed after it seized during previous ownership. The seller reportedly sourced a 2.0-liter ‘Nord’ block from a 1975 Spider, and the motor was rebuilt by BradCo Restorations in Warren, Michigan. The block and head were powder-coated silver and the head was refurbished using RJR camshafts, a ported European-market intake manifold, Centerline headers, and Weber 45 DCOE carburetors. Additional modifications included a balanced crankshaft, Motronic-style 10.4:1 pistons, liners, and wrist pins, MaXpeeding connecting rods, replacement oil and water pumps, and a 123ignition Bluetooth-capable electronic ignition system, with photos of the work documented in the gallery below. The seller states the flywheel was resurfaced and the carburetors and ignition timing were adjusted in summer 2020.

Power is sent to the rear wheels through a five-speed manual transmission. The seller notes corrosion on the undercarriage as well as floor repairs from the prior owner, and additional underside photos are available in the gallery.
