BaT Auction: 1971 Datsun 240Z

This 1971 Datsun 240Z was originally sold from Bales Motor Co. of Jeffersonville, Indiana in June 1971, and it reportedly had two owners before being purchased by the seller in 2011 and subsequently brought to Ontario, Canada. The car then underwent a refurbishment with a repaint in Sunshine Yellow, refreshed interior components, and the installation of 16″ Panasport wheels. The 2.4-liter inline-six and four-speed manual transmission were both rebuilt, and additional work included overhauls of the braking and suspension systems. This 240Z is now offered with spare parts, factory 14″ steel wheels with “D” hubcaps, refurbishment photos, a factory warranty book and warranty card, a bill of sale from 1971, a factory tool kit, and transferable Ontario registration in the seller’s name.

The seller had the rocker-panel doglegs repaired and subsequently had a glass-out repaint in the factory Sunshine Yellow (919). Photos of the body at various stages of the refurbishment process are provided in the gallery below. The seller notes that exterior components were replaced including the driver-side mirror, emblems, windshield, taillight assemblies and gaskets, turn-signal lenses, front and rear marker lenses, weatherstripping, and windshield wipers. The grille was repainted, and the bumpers were reportedly re-chromed and had replacement rubber installed.

Panasport 16″ wheels are wrapped in 205/55 Dunlop Direzza D2 tires, and a set of factory TOPY-stamped 14″ steel wheels with Vredestein Sprint Classic tires and “D” hubcaps is included in the sale and pictured in the gallery. The front and rear brakes have reportedly been rebuilt along with the brake booster, the wheel bearings and seats have been replaced all around, and the seller indicates that suspension components have been powdercoated and reinstalled with replacement shocks, bushings, and boots.

The factory dashboard, vinyl upholstery, and diamond-patterned trim were retained during the refurbishment, when the shift boot, handbrake boot, seat padding and covers, door panels, pedal pads, threshold plates, and carpeting were replaced. The removed door panels and carpeting are included in the sale, and the seller notes that the factory carpeting has been re-dyed. Operation of the factory AM “signal-seeking” Hitachi radio is demonstrated in the video linked here.

The refinished wood-rimmed steering wheel fronts a 160-mph speedometer, an 8k-rpm tachometer, and auxiliary gauges. The five-digit odometer displays 2,500 miles and is said to have rolled over. Approximately 1k miles have been added since the refurbishment.

The 2.4-liter L24 inline-six was rebuilt by Whitehead Performance of North York, Ontario. Other work performed included rebuilding the dual SU carburetors, replacing fuel and cooling hoses, re-coring and repainting the radiator, and replacing the fan-blade assembly and adding a fan clutch from a 1972 240Z. The gas tank was also removed, cleaned, lined, and repainted. The oil was changed in 2019, and the seller notes that the factory fan-blade assembly is included in the sale.

Engine stamping L24 030517 matches the number listed on the chassis ID plate.

Power is sent to the rear wheels via a rebuilt four-speed manual transmission with a replacement clutch and a resurfaced flywheel. The differential was rebuilt, a replacement speedometer cable was installed, and an Abarth exhaust system was installed with dual over/under tips. Additional photos of the underbody are provided in the gallery below.

The car was awarded first place in its class at the 2016 International Z Car Convention in Toronto, Canada.

The June 2, 1971 bill of sale from Bales Motor Co. shows a purchase price of $3,819. The Datsun warranty card is pictured in the gallery and dated May 24, 1971.
