BaT Auction: 1985 Volkswagen Golf GTI

This 1985 Volkswagen Golf GTI is finished in Mars Red over gray cloth and is powered by a 1.8L 8-valve inline-four paired with a close-ratio five-speed manual transaxle. Equipment includes a rear spoiler, a sunroof, and four-wheel disc brakes. The seller acquired the car in 2019, and subsequent modifications are said to include Euro-style headlights and bumpers, a Techtonics Tuning exhaust and camshaft, ST Suspensions coilovers, and 15″ BBS wheels. This first-year Mk2 GTI is now offered with service records from current ownership, factory literature, spare parts, an accident-free Carfax report, and a clean Illinois title in the seller’s name.

The body is finished in Mars Red and features a Euro-style front grille, headlamps, and bumpers. Additional exterior equipment includes a front lip spoiler, a rear hatch spoiler, and a rear window wiper. Noted flaws include several dings and dents and corrosion at the base of the windshield and ahead of the left rear window. Close-up photos of the paint and trim can be viewed in the gallery.

Silver 15″ BBS RA wheels feature polished lips and wear 195/50 Bridgestone Potenza RE-71R tires. Suspension modifications reportedly include ST Suspensions coilovers and Eurosport strut-tower braces. The seller states that the brake rotors and pads were recently replaced and that the factory 14″ wheels are included in the sale.

The cabin is upholstered in gray and black and features two-tone door panels, rubber VW floor mats, and bolstered front seats with patterned inserts. Amenities include a sunroof, a Clarion CD player, a Schroth four-point driver-seat harness, and OMP aluminum pedals. The seller states that the shift linkage was recently rebuilt and notes tears in the driver-seat and a sagging headliner.

The leather-wrapped MOMO steering features yellow stitching and frames a 120-mph speedometer, a 7k-rpm tachometer, a shift light, and gauges for water temperature and fuel level. The six-digit odometer shows 118k miles, approximately 2k of which have been added by the seller. The Carfax report notes a potential odometer rollback in January 2020, and true mileage is unknown. The removed factory steering wheel is included in the sale.

The 1.8L eight-valve inline-four features Bosch fuel injection and was factory-rated for 100 horsepower and 105 lb-ft of torque. Recent service is said to include installing a Techtonics Tuning camshaft and replacing the timing belt, water pump, radiator, and coolant hoses.

Power is sent to the front wheels through a close-ratio five-speed manual transaxle. The Techtonics Tuning exhaust system features a Borla muffler and is depicted above. Additional underside photos can be viewed in the gallery.

The seller states that factory books, period literature, a set of California license plates, service records from current ownership, and a selection of spare parts are included in the sale. Photos of a build sheet provided by the seller can be viewed in the gallery.

The Carfax report begins in 1993 and lists the aforementioned potential odometer rollback. No accidents or damage are indicated and history is shown in California and Illinois through the most recent entry in October 2020.
