This 1973 BMW 2002tii was purchased by the seller in 2016, who then had an M42 1.8-liter inline-four installed along with an E30-sourced five-speed manual gearbox. Work was performed by CAtuned Motorsports of Sacramento, California, and further additions under current ownership include a Nardi steering wheel, 15″ Rota wheels, HID headlights, a front air dam, and tinted windows. The car was repainted in blue by the prior owner, who also installed Ireland Engineering springs and Bilstein HD struts and shocks, and the interior features Recaro front seats that have been reupholstered in black vinyl. This modified 2002tii is now offered with assorted spare parts, service records from current and previous ownership, a car cover, and a clean California title in the seller’s name.
The car was repainted in dark blue by the previous owner, and the nose, hood, driver-side door and rear driver-side quarter panel were replaced prior to paint. The seller notes various dings and imperfections in the walk-around video provided at the end of the listing, and an area of bubbling is exhibited near the bottom of the passenger-side rear window. The windshield and door seals were replaced during prior ownership, and the seller has added an aluminum front valance, HID headlights, and had the windows tinted.
Rota 15×6″ wheels purchased in January 2019 are wrapped in 195/50 Achilles ATR Sport tires. The suspension was modified under prior ownership with Bilstein HD struts and shocks, Ireland Engineering Stage 1 springs, replacement bushings, and BluntTech sway bars.
The cabin features Recaro front seats that were reupholstered in black vinyl during previous ownership. A third brake light has been installed in the back window, and the seller notes that the replacement black dashboard exhibits cracks. A GAHH Automotive carpeting kit was installed under prior ownership, and a Blaupunkt stereo and an Avital car alarm have been added. The passenger-side rear speaker is not installed. Access to the engine’s ECU is through the glovebox.
A wood-rimmed Nardi steering wheel fronts a VDO 8k-rpm tachometer, an aftermarket GPS-based 120-mph speedometer, and a temperature and fuel gauge. Just under 900 miles are displayed on the digital odometer, and the seller notes adding approximately 1k miles to the car over the course of ownership; true mileage is unknown. The horn has been relocated to a button above the stereo, and the seller states that the clock is not currently wired to power, but was reportedly functional prior to the engine swap. The removed factory speedometer is included in the sale.
The M42 1.8-liter inline-four was reportedly sourced from an E30 318is along with the five-speed manual transmission, and the swap was performed by CAtuned Performance of Sacramento, California. The battery was relocated to the trunk, various components were powdercoated in black, the engine has a performance chip, and a power-distribution box installed in the engine bay helps manage the headlight relays and the electric fan. The fuel pump and sender were replaced with an in-tank E30 unit.
Power is routed to the rear wheels via the aforementioned five-speed manual transmission. Replacement exhaust components can be seen above, and additional photos of the underbody are provided in the gallery below.
Factory literature and service records from current and prior ownership are included in the sale, and individual invoices from 2017–2019 can be viewed in the gallery below.
A narrated walk-around video is presented above, and a narrated video with a cold start, driving footage, and a headlight and taillight demonstration is below.
