BaT Auction: Mercedes-Benz Unimog U1300L

This Mercedes-Benz Unimog U1300L flatbed is said to have been used by the German Bundeswehr and spent time in New Jersey and Nevada in the early 2000s before being relocated to British Columbia, Canada. The seller acquired the truck six years ago and has since added approximately 20k kilometers (~12k miles). Under current ownership the truck has been stripped and refinished in green, and the bed was re-decked with wood. A turbodiesel 5.9-liter inline-six is paired with an eight-speed manual transmission, and additional equipment includes 20″ wheels, 365/80-series tires, a roof hatch, folding bed sides, storage lockers, a bed crane, a bed-mounted fuel tank, a front winch, and a navigation display. Service in mid-2020 included fluid changes and greasing the driveline. This 435 Unimog is now offered in Canada with transferable British Columbia registration in the seller’s name that lists the vehicle as a 1985 model.

The seller states that the truck was stripped during current ownership before being refinished in drab green to address worn paint, and the bed has been re-decked. A dent on the driver-side fender and dings in the fuel-tank straps are noted by the seller. Aftermarket front lights have been fitted, and each side of the truck is shown in the photo gallery below.

Black 20″ steel wheels are mounted with 365/80 Michelin X tires. Additional equipment includes folding bed sides, a bed crane, a bed-mounted auxiliary fuel tank, storage lockers, a snorkel, a front winch, a rear hitch receiver, and a circular roof hatch.

The cabin features a bucket driver seat with patterned gray cloth upholstery and a brown backside. A two-person bench seat for passengers wears a black and green cover, and a CB radio is mounted under the passenger side of the dashboard. A navigation display is positioned in a diamond-plate box mounted to the ceiling above the steering wheel.

Factory VDO instrumentation includes a 100-km/h speedometer, a 3k-rpm tachometer, and a combination gauge. The seller notes that the fuel gauge works intermittently. The six-digit odometer shows 99k kilometers (~62k miles), approximately 20k of which have been added by the seller over the past six years.

The seller states that the turbodiesel 5.9-liter OM366A inline-six was serviced with fresh fluids in mid-2020, at which time the driveline was greased. Power is delivered to all four wheels through a manual transmission with eight forward speeds and four reverse gears.

The truck utilizes solid front and rear axles, a torque tube, and pneumatically controlled locking differentials. Additional photos of the underside are presented in the gallery below and depict corrosion on some parts, particularly the exhaust system.

Images toward the end of the gallery show the truck with the bed removed, at which time various components were refinished and the bed was redone.

The Carfax report shows no accidents or other issues, and it lists registration activity in New Jersey, Nevada, and British Columbia since its first entry in 2002.

The narrated walk-around video above shows the truck running.
