BaT Auction: 1913 Locomobile Model 38 Five-Passenger Tourer

This 1913 Locomobile Model 38 is a five-passenger tourer that won the AACA National First Prize in 1963 and was reportedly restored later that decade. It is said to have spent time in the Imperial Palace Auto Collection in Las Vegas, Nevada, before going to a private collection in Connecticut. The seller states that the car participated in an over 600-mile “brass and gas” tour in 2017 before his father’s purchase in 2020. The car is finished in green with black fenders and a black soft top over a black tufted leather interior, and power comes from a 425ci T-head inline-six paired with a four-speed manual transmission. Modifications include a 12-volt starter, an electric fuel pump, and LED turn signals. This Locomobile is now offered in Virginia by the seller on behalf of his father with recent service records and a clean California title.

The Locomobile Company of America was founded in Watertown, Massachusetts, in 1899 and began by building Stanley-designed steam-powered automobiles. In 1901, the company moved to Bridgeport, Connecticut, and shifted its focus to gasoline-powered cars. The Model R-38 was introduced in 1912 as a competitor to the smaller offerings from rival Pierce-Arrow.

This example is said to have received bodywork and a repaint in its current green with black fenders during the 1960s restoration, with additional sorting performed by G&G Restorations of Proctorsville, Vermont, in 2007. Styling cues include green pinstriping, running boards, cowl lamps, a rear taillight, and a brass radiator surround, mirrors, horn, and electric headlight buckets. LED turn signals were installed during previous ownership, and Vintage Motor Car Club of America and Horseless Carriage Club of America badges are affixed to the grille. Chips in the finish are noted by the seller.

Wood-spoke wheels are finished in green with lighter pinstriping and brass Locomobile center hubs. They are mounted with BFGoodrich Silvertown 36×4.5″ tires that were mounted in 2002, with two spare rims and tires mounted out back. The Model 38 featured semi-elliptical leaf springs front and rear, while braking is handled by mechanical rear drums. The black soft top features a roll-down four-pane window.

The right-hand-drive cabin offers accommodations for five occupants across two benches trimmed in black tufted leather. A front passenger footrest is fitted, and the rear seating area features a brass footrest, black carpets, and door panel storage pockets.

The four-spoke steering wheel features hand controls mounted on the brass steering column and fronts a wood dashboard and an AutoMeter barrel-type speedometer. Approximately 18k miles are shown on the five-digit odometer. Total mileage is unknown.

The 425ci T-head inline-six features a Carter BB1 updraft carburetor and was rated at approximately 50 horsepower when new. An alternator, a 12-volt starter, an electric fuel pump, and a new fuse block were fitted during previous ownership. Power is sent to the rear wheels via a four-speed manual transmission.
