BaT Auction: 1969 Honda CB750 Sandcast

This 1969 Honda CB750 is powered by a 736cc inline-four featuring a “sandcast” case. The bike was acquired as a non-running project in 2018 by the seller, who subsequently completed a restoration that consisted of painting the frame and bodywork, engine and suspension overhauls, carburetor rebuilds, and chrome-plating the rims, handlebar, foot controls, and rear fender. New items fitted include a replacement seat, master cylinder, front fender, and exhaust system. This CB750K0 Sandcast is offered with restoration parts and a clean Massachusetts title in the seller’s name.

The fuel tank was cleaned, sealed, and finished in Candy Blue Green with gold stripes, and the side covers, headlight bucket, and mounting ears were painted to match. The frame was bead-blasted and finished in black, and a new seat and double-cut front fender were added. Chrome plating was applied to the rims, rear fender, handlebar, and other parts, while the rear brake rod, stay, indicator washer, and axle spacer were zinc-plated.

Wire-spoke wheels were mounted with factory-style Dunlop Gold Seal tires. Suspension consists of a conventional fork featuring black rubber gaiters and replacement tubes as well as a swingarm with chrome shocks. The front disc brake was fitted with a new master cylinder and hoses.

Instrumentation consists of a 150-mph speedometer, a tachometer with an 8,500-rpm redline, and a five-digit odometer showing under 4k miles, a handful of which have been ridden by the seller. Total mileage is unknown.

The air-cooled 736cc SOHC inline-four features an early-production “Sandcast” case with a rough texture formed by a gravity-casting method rather than the traditional die-casting used for the bulk of the model run. An eying overhaul carried out during the restoration included honing the cylinders, milling the cylinder head, and installation of .25mm-oversize pistons as well as new rings, gaskets, oil seals, valves, and guides. The Keihin carburetors were rebuilt and a new four-into-four exhaust system fitted.

The stamped engine number includes a corrected second-to-last digit. A video showing the numbers stamped into the upper and lower cases has been provided by the seller, and the frame stamp is photographed in the gallery.

Power is sent to the rear wheel through a five-speed transmission, a new drive chain, and replacement steel sprockets. The seller states that the kickstart lever does not completely return to the top of its travel on its own. Narrated walk-around and riding videos are shown below.
