BaT Auction: 1970 BMW 2002

This 1970 BMW 2002 underwent a refurbishment by The Werk Shop in Libertyville, Illinois from 2014 through 2017 and was acquired by the seller in July 2020. Work included a repaint in red, a reupholstered black interior, and a rebuild of the 2.0-liter inline-four. Shifting is through a four-speed manual gearbox, and additional equipment includes 14″ steel wheels, Bilstein shocks, H&R lowering springs, and a Blaupunkt AM/FM radio. The driveshaft center support bearing and rear pinion seal were replaced in 2019. This 2002 is now offered with a handful of refurbishment photos and receipts, a workshop manual, and a clean Missouri title in the seller’s name.

Finished from the factory in Granada Red, the car was repainted during the aforementioned refurbishment by The Werk Shop following body repairs and the installation of a replacement passenger door. The brightwork was also refreshed, and close-up photos of the paintwork, trim, and glass are shown in the gallery below.

Refinished 14″ steel wheels are wrapped in Firestone All-Season tires sized 185/65. Bilstein shocks and H&R lowering springs were installed in 2019. A spare set of 13″ wheels is also included in the sale.

The cabin features black vinyl seats with matching door panels and replacement charcoal carpets. Additional equipment includes a heater, cup holders, and a Blaupunkt AM/FM radio.

A three-spoke steering wheel fronts instrumentation that includes a 120-mph speedometer, a tachometer with a 6,400-rpm redline, and gauges for coolant temperature and fuel level. The five-digit odometer shows 27k miles, approximately 100 of which have been added by the seller. True mileage is unknown.

The 2.0-liter M10 inline-four was rebuilt during the refurbishment and is fitted with a single Weber carburetor. Power is sent to the rear wheels through a four-speed manual transmission.

The driveshaft center support bushing and rear pinion seal were replaced in 2019. Additional photos of the underbody, suspension, and brakes are viewable below.

A handful of images and receipts from the refurbishment process that are said to total over $176k are also available in the gallery.

A binder documenting the work is included in the sale, along with CDs, three keys, and a workshop manual.
