BaT Auction: Twin-Plug 3.6L-Powered 1975 Porsche 914

This 1975 Porsche 914 was modified during previous ownership for street and track use, and it is powered by a 3.6-liter flat-six with twin-plug cylinder heads paired with a Type 901 five-speed manual transaxle. The car was reportedly campaigned at the Hershey Hill Climb in Hershey, Pennsylvania, during previous ownership. It is finished in silver over a black interior and features a removable Targa roof panel, a rear lip spoiler, and fixed-back seats. Additional equipment includes widened fender flares, a roll cage with removable door bars, upgraded torsion bars and lowering springs, later Porsche-sourced disc brakes, and a custom exhaust system with three outlets. This modified 914 is now offered with a clean Louisiana title in the seller’s name.

The body is finished in metallic silver, and modifications during previous ownership included wider wheel-arch flares, a fiberglass rear deck lid with balsa wood reinforcements, a fiberglass front trunk lid, and fiberglass front and rear bumper filler panels. Equipment includes pop-up headlamps, a removable Targa roof panel, and a black duck-tail rear spoiler. The seller notes paint chips on the wheel-arch flares and states that the left-front fender was repaired and refinished after the flare was cracked during current ownership.

16″ Fuchs wheels were reportedly sourced from a 930 Turbo, feature black centers and polished lips, and they are wrapped in Pirelli P Zero tires measuring 225/50 up front and 245/45 out back. Modifications and equipment are said to include extended-length wheel studs, aftermarket front torsion bars, Bilstein front shocks built to RUF specifications with solid bushings, Bilstein rear shocks, and rear lowering springs. Braking is handled by front disc brakes sourced from the rear of a later Boxster model and 911 Carerra-sourced rear disc brakes. A brake bias adjustment lever is mounted behind the front seats, and the seller states that the rear sway bar has been disconnected.

The cockpit features fixed-back seats that were reportedly custom made for a larger frame and upholstered in black with removable bottom booster pads. Equipment includes black carpets, door panels without storage pockets featuring RS-style door pull straps, Simpson harnesses, an aluminum pedal board, drilled aluminum pedals, a balsa wood shift knob, a fire extinguisher mounted between the seats, and a custom roll cage featuring door bars that can be folded away or removed. Triangulated bars are fitted in the front trunk and rear trunk/engine compartment. The glove box features a Hurley Haywood signature.

A Racemark steering wheel frames body-color silver instrumentation consisting of a 10k-rpm tachometer with an inset oil pressure gauge, a 150-mph speedometer, and gauges for engine temperature and fuel level. The five-digit odometer shows 93k miles, approximately 2k of which were added by the seller since 2007. True mileage is unknown.

The 3.6-liter flat-six was installed during previous ownership and features twin-plug cylinder heads. The battery is mounted in the front trunk along with an external oil cooler, and a battery cut-out switch is mounted in the engine compartment.

Power is transferred to the rear wheels through a Type 901 five-speed manual transaxle. Tubular exhaust headers feed into a custom muffler and exhaust system with three outlets. The two central exhaust tips can be capped for additional sound control.
