This 1968 Mercedes-Benz 280SL is finished in Signal Red over Cognac leather and is powered by a fuel-injected 2.8L inline-six paired with a four-speed manual transmission. The car is said to have been acquired by Performance Vintage Classicos in San Pedro, Dominican Republic, then was disassembled and stripped, and subsequently received a mechanical and cosmetic restoration with new paint, a new interior, and overhauled components including the engine, transmission, fuel-injection pump, brake system, suspension, and additional components detailed below. Equipment includes factory Frigid-King air conditioning, power-assisted steering, a body-color removable hardtop, a black soft top, Coco floor mats, and a Becker radio with an auxiliary input. Fewer than 300 miles are said to have been accumulated since the 2017 refurbishment, and this W113 SL is now offered at no reserve with a factory data card, tools and manuals, a booklet detailing the refurbishment, and a clean New Jersey title in the seller’s name.
The car was finished in black from the factory and is said to have been stripped to bare metal and refinished in Mercedes Signal Red (DB-568) in 2017 at the request of the original client. BASF Glasurit products were utilized during the refurbishment work, and the car reportedly retains its factory fenders and spot welds. The following work was completed and parts were replaced:
- New factory windshield and windows
- Exterior chrome replaced or replated in a triple-plating process
- Refurbished hardtop with a new headliner
- New German-made black soft top
- New rubber seals
- New antenna
Factory 14″ wheels wear chrome full covers with color-coordinated centers and Vredestein Sprint Classic tires. The car is fitted with power-assisted steering, and refurbishment work included installation new brake lines, brake pads, and suspension bushings.
The cabin was reupholstered with Cognac German Oldtimer leather covering the seats, door panels, and dashboard pads, along with tan square-weave carpets protected by Coco mats. Amenities include factory Frigid-King air conditioning, Wurth rubberized insulation, refinished interior trim, new period Mercedes seat belts, burl wood trim, and a factory Becker radio that is modified with an auxiliary input. The air-conditioning compressor was overhauled and the wiring harness was replaced during the car’s 2017 refurbishment.
The cream-colored steering wheel frames instrumentation said to have been refurbished and recalibrated, which includes a tachometer, a 240-km/h speedometer, and gauges for fuel level, oil pressure, and coolant temperature. The odometer shows under 300 miles, which is the distance traveled since refurbishment. Total chassis mileage is unknown.
The 2.8-liter M130 inline-six features Bosch mechanical fuel injection and was factory rated at 168 horsepower and 177 lb-ft of torque. The engine was refurbished using factory parts by Metric Motors, and a compression test video is provided here. Additional work completed in 2017 is said to have included the following:
- Refurbished radiator
- Replacement engine pad and grommets
- Fuel-injection pump and cold-start valve overhauled by H&R Fuel Injection
