BaT Auction: 1989 Saab 900 Turbo 5-Speed

This 1989 Saab 900 Turbo hatchback was originally purchased through Saab’s International Delivery Service, and it is finished in silver over gray cloth and powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter 16-valve inline-four paired with a five-speed manual transaxle. Features include a factory Airflow body kit, a sunroof, 16″ Super Aero wheels, a heckblende panel, a Saab-branded MOMO steering wheel, Bilstein HD shocks, European-market H4 headlights, and braided stainless-steel brake lines. The car spent time in Virginia, Wisconsin, Florida, and Texas before it was acquired by the seller in 2018 and subsequently relocated to Tennessee. The tires were replaced in December 2018, and a July 2020 engine-out service included replacement of the steering rack, radiator, starter, alternator, and engine gaskets and seals. This 900 Turbo hatchback is now offered in Tennessee with factory books, Saab IDS documentation, a tool kit, service records, spare parts, a clean Carfax report, and a clean Georgia title in the seller’s name.

The body is finished in silver and features a factory Airflow body kit, a heckblende taillight panel, a sunroof, and fog lights. The seller reports that the front end was refinished during prior ownership, and European-market H4 headlights are fitted. An area of clearcoat failure on the steel sunroof panel is visible and shown up close in the gallery along with photos of factory glass etchings. An additional set of factory fog lights are included in the sale.

16″ Super Aero wheels are fitted with 205/50 Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 3+ tires that were installed in December 2018. A space-saver spare wheel and tire are mounted under the trunk floor along with a tool kit. Bilstein HD shocks were installed during the seller’s ownership along with a replacement of the steering rack, left CV boot, tie rod ends, brake pads, rotors, and stainless-steel braided lines.

The cabin features seats trimmed in gray cloth upholstery with matching carpets and door panels. A Clarion Bluetooth-capable stereo is fitted in the dashboard, and the removed Clarion/Saab cassette player and graphic equalizer are included in the sale and shown in the gallery below. The air-conditioning compressor and condenser were replaced during the seller’s ownership, and the seller notes that the dashboard is cracked.

The Saab-branded MOMO steering wheel frames a 125-mph speedometer and a 7k-rpm tachometer with an inset analog clock, along with gauges for boost pressure, coolant temperature, and fuel level. Just under 94k miles are shown on the six-digit odometer, approximately 4k of which were added during the seller’s ownership.

The turbocharged 2.0-liter B202 16-valve inline-four was factory rated at 175 horsepower. The oil cooler and lines were replaced during the seller’s ownership along with the engine mounts and ignition components, and a July 2020 engine-out service included the following:

  • Cylinder head resurfaced and flow-tested
  • New engine seals and gaskets
  • Radiator and coolant expansion tank
  • Water pump and thermostat
  • Bosch Starter and alternator

Power is sent to the front wheels via a five-speed manual transaxle. The clutch slave cylinder and oxygen sensor were replaced during current ownership.

Factory books and service records are included in the sale and shown in the gallery, along with photos taken during the July 2020 service.

The Carfax report shows no accidents or other damage and lists registration history in Virginia, Wisconsin, Florida, Texas, and Georgia through its most recent entry in September 2019.
