This 1979 Austin Mini was built as a rally car in 1996 for Team Mini Mania, reportedly by MiniComp Racing. The car was subsequently acquired in 1997 by the late Bruce Brown, a filmmaker known for his work directing On Any Sunday (1971) and surf movies such as The Endless Summer (1966). Finished in red with a white roof and top stripe, the car is powered by a 1,380cc inline-four paired with a four-speed manual transmission. The car is also equipped with Acura Integra bucket seats, a roll cage, a racing harness for the driver, modified suspension and brakes, 10″ wheels, a hood scoop, and driving lights. Service in November 2020 included changing the oil and coolant, adjusting the brakes, and replacing the tires. This modified Mini is now offered by the selling dealer with removed components including a set of 10″ Minilite wheels with tires, a pair of bucket seats, a cylinder head, emissions equipment, and suspension parts as well as a clean California title in the name of Bruce A Brown.
The car was refinished in red with a white stripe and roof in the mid-1990s and features a hood scoop, driving lights affixed to the grille, and Team Mini Mania decals. The paintwork and exterior trim are shown up close in the photo gallery.
Black 10″ wheels are mounted with Yokohama Advan HF Type-D A008 tires, which show 2020 date codes. A set of Minilite wheels with scrubbed Goodyear Eagle slicks will also accompany the car. The selling dealer states that the suspension has been modified and larger brakes have been installed. The brakes were adjusted in November 2020.
The interior has been fitted with a roll cage and gray cloth front bucket seats sourced from an Acura Integra. Simpson racing harnesses are mounted around the driver-side headrest, and a camera mount is affixed to the roll cage. Additional features include a rear bench seat, gray door panels, black carpeting, and a wood dashboard face.
A Mountney steering wheel sits ahead of Smiths instrumentation that includes a 150-km/h speedometer. The five-digit odometer shows 54k kilometers (~33k miles), approximately 1,500 of which have been added by the selling dealer over the past two years. True chassis mileage is unknown.
Paired with a four-speed manual transmission, the inline-four is said to displace 1,380cc. Service in November 2020 included changing the oil and the coolant. The selling dealer states that the vehicle has not passed California smog testing since 1995.
The car is equipped with dual fuel tanks. Additional photos of the underside are presented in the gallery below and depict corrosion on some components.
A pair of removed bucket seats with two-tone black and tan upholstery will accompany the car along with the aforementioned 10″ Minilite wheels, which are pictured in the gallery. Suspension components, emissions equipment, a cylinder head, and other small parts that are included with the car are also shown below.
A start-up video is provided above, and acceleration footage is below.
