BaT Auction: One-Owner 1981 Honda Civic CVCC 5-Speed at No Reserve

This 1981 Honda Civic 1500 DX was purchased new by the current owner at Long Beach Honda in Long Beach, California and is powered by a 1,488cc CVCC inline four-cylinder mated to a five-speed manual transaxle. It is finished in Shetland White over a beige cloth and vinyl interior and features air conditioning, chrome trim, a rear-window wiper, front mudflaps, and a fold down rear seat. The timing belt and tensioner were replaced in 2018, the cylinder head was refreshed in 2019, and the carburetor was rebuilt in December 2020. This Civic is now being offered at no reserve by the seller on behalf of his sister with an owner’s manual, service records, window sticker, an accident-free Carfax report, and a clean California title.

The car is finished in Shetland White (NH61) with tan pinstripes. Details include chrome and black rubber bumpers, a driver’s side mirror, rear-window wiper, and pop-out rear side windows. Finish flaws include a dent around the driver-side front wheel well, touched-up blemishes around the front bumper, and a scratch on the rear hatch.

The 13″ steel wheels wear Honda-branded center caps and 155/80 SA4 All Season tires. A full size spare is stored in the trunk. Front disc and rear drum brakes were standard, and work completed in the last three years includes machining the front calipers and replacing the front brake pads, outer and inner wheel bearings, and a brake fluid flush.

The interior features beige cloth and vinyl front bucket seats and a fold-down rear bench, along with a matching dash, door panels, and carpets. Amenities include a cassette stereo, air conditioning, a remote hatch release, intermittent wipers, black floor mats, and a rear hatch privacy screen. Tears are noted in the driver’s seat bolster and passenger seat bottom.

A two-spoke factory steering wheel with an aftermarket lace-up cover frames an 85-mph speedometer and a combination gauge displaying fuel level and coolant temperature. The five-digit odometer has reportedly rolled over once and currently shows 28k miles.

The 1,488cc CVCC inline-four was factory-rated at 67 horsepower and 78 ft-lb of torque when new. The timing belt and tensioner were replaced by Laguna Woods Auto Repair of Laguna Hills, California in 2018, along with the rod bearings, valve seals, and piston rings. The cylinder head was resurfaced and fitted with a new gasket in 2019, while more recent work in December 2020 included rebuilding the carburetor and replacing the spark plugs and fuel filter. Additional work over the last decade is outlined on invoices provided in the gallery.

Power is transferred to the front wheels through a five-speed manual transaxle. Additional underbody photos can be seen in the gallery.

The window sticker lists the factory options as well as a total price of $5,169. An owner’s manual and service records are also included in the sale.

The Carfax report shows no accidents or other damage, displays two potential odometer rollbacks, and lists history in California from its first update in September 1990 through its most recent entry in December 2020.
