BaT Auction: 1973 Yamaha MX250 at No Reserve

This 1973 Yamaha MX250 comes from the model’s first of three production years and was acquired by the seller in 2020, reportedly following longterm ownership in Arizona and five years of display in Oklahoma. Power is from a 246cc two-stroke single mated to a five-speed transmission, and additional equipment includes a 21″ front wheel, a black vinyl seat, number plates, and a side stand. Service carried out in December 2020 consisted of cleaning the carburetor, a tune-up, clutch and brake adjustments, and replacement of the handlebar kill switch, shift shaft seal, spark plug, and resistor cap. This MX250 motocross bike is offered at no reserve with an owner’s manual and a Missouri bill of sale.

The fuel tank is finished in silver with yellow and black accents. Number plates are affixed to the side covers and front end. Additional equipment includes a black vinyl seat, and a side stand as well as a replacement rear muffler bracket and fenders. The seller notes blemishes on the left side of the tank along with scratches on the rims and scuffed engine covers.

Wire-spoke wheels with shouldered 21″ and 18″ rims were mounted with on-/off-road Kenda tires under previous ownership. Suspension is from a conventional fork and dual shocks mounted to the swingarm. Braking is from drums at both ends, which were adjusted in December 2020.

The chrome handlebar features a center cross-brace and is said to be bent. The seller estimates having ridden the bike approximately 30 miles, though no instrumentation was equipped from the factory and total mileage is unknown.

The air-cooled 246cc two-stroke single drives the rear wheel through a five-speed transmission and a chain, which the seller states should be replaced before riding. Service carried out in December 2020 included a carburetor cleaning, a tune-up, and a clutch adjustment as well as installation of a new shift shaft seal, NGK spark plug, resistor cap, and handlebar kill switch.

An owner’s manual is included in the sale. A narrated walk-around video showing the engine at idle, as well as a riding video, can be viewed below.
