This 1978 Datsun 280Z is said to have spent its life in California and was reportedly acquired by the seller from the widow of the original owner in January 2021. It is finished in silver over a black interior and is powered by a replacement fuel-injected 2.8L inline-six paired with a five-speed manual transmission. Equipment includes 14” wheels, front and rear chrome bumper guards, a power antenna, and a factory Hitachi AM/FM radio. This 280Z is now offered with manufacturer’s literature, two keys, a black bra, two carpeted floor mats, service records beginning in 2010, a tool kit, an extra driver seat cover, an extra hubcap, and a clean California title in the seller’s name.
The exterior has reportedly been repainted its factory shade of silver under prior ownership. Features include chrome-accented impact bumpers with rails, hood vents, C-pillar “Z” emblems, a driver-side mirror, and a power radio antenna. Six-digit blue California license plates dating back to 1978 are mounted at either end. Paint meter readings taken from around the body can be seen in the gallery.
14” steel wheels wear factory covers and are mounted with 195/70 Michelin Harmony tires. Braking is handled by power-assisted front discs and rear drums.
The interior features bucket seats upholstered in black vinyl along with a matching dashboard, door panels, and carpeting. Amenities include a factory Hitachi push-button AM/FM stereo, a heated rear window, and manual windows. The spare tire has not been removed, a jack kit, tool kit, and tire inflation canister are housed in the rear cargo area.
A three-spoke steering wheel frames a 160-mph speedometer, an 8k-rpm tachometer, and a five-digit odometer that shows 45k miles, approximately 100 of which were added by the seller. True mileage is unknown.
A remanufactured 2.8-liter inline-six was installed by Square Deal Garage of Pinole, California in 2010, and a new clutch and resurfaced flywheel were also fitted at that time. More recent work in 2021 included changing the engine oil and replacing the starter and radiator cap. A cold-start video can be seen here.
