BaT Auction: 1989 Toyota MR2 Supercharged 5-Speed at No Reserve

This 1989 Toyota MR2 spent most of its life in California before being acquired by the seller as a damaged project in Arizona in 2014. Finished in black over a black and white interior, the car is powered by a supercharged 1.6-liter inline-four paired with a five-speed manual transaxle. Features include 15″ Konig wheels, removable roof panels, drilled and slotted brake rotors, a rear strut tower brace, Eibach lowering springs, and a Magnaflow exhaust. This AW11 is now offered at no reserve with slip covers for the roof panels, a spare hood, a Carfax report, and a salvage Arizona title in the seller’s name.

The body is finished in black and features removable roof panels, twin exhaust outlets, a rear visor, and a rear spoiler with an integrated third brake light. The Carfax report lists an accident in September 2013, and the seller states that the front bumper cover, driver-side fender, and hood were replaced as a result. Hail damage is noted on the hood, and a spare hood is included in the sale.

Silver 15″ Konig Helium wheels are mounted with 195/50 front and 205/50 rear Kuhmo Ecsta AST tires. The brakes are equipped with slotted and drilled rotors, and suspension modifications include Eibach lowering springs, Tokico adjustable shocks, a Cusco rear strut tower brace, and polyurethane suspension and sway bar bushings.

The seats are upholstered in two-tone black and white cloth, and the cabin features a black dash, carpeting, and door panels. Modifications include an aftermarket steering wheel, a Hurst shifter, Momo pedals, and a Kenwood stereo. The seller notes that the air conditioning and dome light are inoperable and describes corrosion in the passenger door jamb.

Instrumentation includes a 150-mph speedometer and a tachometer with a 6,500-rpm redline. The six-digit mechanical odometer shows just under 85k miles, approximately 6k of which have been added by the seller. Total mileage is unknown.

The supercharged and intercooled 1.6-liter 4A-GZE inline-four was factory-rated at 145 horsepower and 137 lb-ft of torque when new and has been fitted with a Magnaflow exhaust. Power is transferred to the rear wheels through a five-speed manual transaxle, and the seller states that the battery was replaced last year.

The Carfax report shows the aforementioned accident in 2013, lists a potential odometer rollback in 2007, and displays history and registrations in New Jersey, California, and Arizona from its initial update in 1989 through its most recent entry in November 2014. The car was declared a total loss vehicle in September 2013 and was issued a salvage title in Arizona the following month. A photo of the current title is viewable in the gallery, and a video presentation is provided below.
