This Autodynamics Caldwell D-10 was manufactured prior to December 31, 1969 for Formula Super Vee competition and was acquired without an engine in 1971 by its late owner, who raced the car for decades. The car was overhauled in the late 1990s when the fiberglass bodywork was refurbished and refinished and the roll bar was updated. Power comes from a mid-mounted 1.6-liter Volkswagen flat-four paired with a four-speed VW manual transaxle, and other features include dual Weber carburetors, an oil cooler, a tubular exhaust collector, 13″ wheels, disc brakes, coilover suspension, a fire-suppression system, provisions for a racing harness, a Mountney steering wheel, and VDO gauges. Service in July 2020 consisted of changing the fluids and replacing the spark plugs as well as the battery. This Caldwell D-10 racing car is offered in Washington at no reserve by the seller on behalf of the widow of its late owner with two extra frames, a spares package, Autodynamics literature, logbooks, letters, and a bill of sale.
The car is said to have been overhauled in the late 1990s, which included refinishing the fiberglass bodywork in lime green. At this time the roll-bar section was replaced using 1.375″ x 0.095″ 4130 chromium-molybdenum alloy steel.
Silver-finished 13″ Panasport wheels are mounted with treaded Avon tires. Rack-and-pinion steering is utilized, and each corner is equipped with coilover suspension and disc brakes.
The battery is mounted in the nose, and the tube-frame chassis is shown in the photo gallery below with its bodywork removed.
The cockpit consists of a single molded seat with a snap-in pad, and the bodywork features slots for a racing harness. The shifter is located to the right of the steering wheel, and a fire-suppression tank is mounted under the driver’s legs. The pedal assembly utilizes a cable-driven throttle paired with floor-mounted pedals for the brakes and clutch.
A Mountney GT Britain steering wheel sits ahead of VDO instrumentation that includes a 10k-rpm tachometer, an oil-pressure gauge, an oil-temperature gauge, and an ammeter. An Autodynamics Corp. tag affixed to the dashboard indicates the D-10 model, and the serial number reads 70040002.
The mid-mounted 1.6-liter VW flat-four is equipped with dual Weber carburetors, finned EMPI valve covers, an oil cooler, and tubular four-to-one exhaust headers that terminate through a Supertrapp muffler. Power is delivered to the rear wheels through a four-speed VW manual transaxle with a hydraulically actuated clutch. Service in July 2020 included changing the fluids as well as replacing the spark plugs and the battery.
A spares package accompanying the car includes two extra frames, a gearbox, numerous spindles, hubs, uprights, and other suspension components, velocity stacks, valve covers, jack stands, and other items, as pictured in the gallery.
