BaT Auction: 5.0L-Powered 1992 Mazda MX-5 Miata Special Edition at No Reserve

This 1992 Mazda MX-5 Miata Special Edition was modified during prior ownership with installation of a fuel-injected Ford 5.0-liter V8 and a T-5 five-speed manual transmission using a Monster Miata conversion kit. The car is finished in black with a tan convertible top over tan upholstery, and additional equipment includes a limited-slip differential, a double-diagonal roll bar and door bars, Monster Miata springs, and a Wilwood front brake kit as well as a Wilwood bias valve. The car spent time in several states before it was acquired by the seller on BaT in November 2019, and subsequent work included fitting Koni adjustable dampers, 15″ 949 Racing wheels, and a new exhaust system, refinishing the front end, and an interior refresh with installation of a radio. This NA ‘Black Miata’ is now offered at no reserve with manuals, service records, some spare parts, a clean Carfax report, and a clean Arizona title in the seller’s name.

The exterior is finished in black and paired with a tan convertible top, and features a front air dam, JDM-style badging, tinted tail lenses, and pop-up headlights, the latter of which are shown raised in the gallery. During current ownership the front bumper and hood were refinished, and paintless dent removal and a paint correction were performed according to the seller. Close-up photos provided in the gallery show the finish, a patch on the top, and imperfections on the rear wheel well arch and rear panel. A spare trunk lid equipped with a spoiler is included in the sale.

Gold-colored 15″ 949 Racing 6UL alloy wheels are pictured up close in the gallery and are fitted with 225/45 Kumho Ecsta V720 tires. Koni adjustable dampers were also fitted during current ownership, and braking is handled by a Wilwood front big brake kit, larger rear discs with Flyin’ Miata caliper spacers, braided stainless-steel lines, a Wilwood brake bias valve, and a master cylinder mount brace.

Replacement seat covers are complemented by matching door panels and black accent trim. A Hard Dog double-diagonal roll bar and door bars are fitted, and additional equipment includes an Excelon stereo, a replacement climate control faceplate, aftermarket vent rings, and a pair of Miata-logo floor mats. The air-conditioning components were removed during prior ownership.

The leather-wrapped MOMO Prototipo steering wheel sits ahead of an 8k-rpm tachometer and an inoperative 140-mph speedometer. The odometer shows 105k miles, and total mileage is unknown. The oil-pressure gauge also does not work, and the tachometer needle is described as jumpy.

A 5.0-liter Ford Windsor V8 sourced from a 1994 Ford Mustang GT was installed utilizing a Monster Miata kit, which includes the front subframe, oil pan, aluminum radiator, mounts, brackets, clutch components, rear hubs, thermal-coated headers, and a Flowmaster muffler. The emissions equipment has been removed, and a wiring harness built by McCully Racing Motors is fitted. Servicing during current ownership included a coolant flush and engine oil change, and a cold-start demonstration is viewable here.

Power is sent to the rear wheels via a T5 World Class 5-speed manual transmission and a Thunderbird-based 3.27:1 limited-slip differential supplied and built by Monster Miata. The car is also equipped with Monster Miata-supplied axles and a custom propshaft, and during current ownership the rear exhaust section was fitted.

Additional parts include engine mounts, a Mishimoto shifter knob, a shifter adapter, speedometer cable, and a bolt-in harness bar, along with some interior panels and removed factory parts.

The Carfax report shows no accidents or other damage and lists registration history in Pennsylvania, Georgia, Washington, and Arizona. A walk-around and driving demonstration is presented below, and an additional driving video is viewable here.
