BaT Auction: Modified 2005 Subaru Forester 5-Speed

This 2005 Subaru Forester spent time in California and Texas before being relocated to Colorado, where it was acquired by the seller in 2019. Power comes from a replacement 2.5-liter flat-four that has been fitted with a Zage turbocharger, a top-mount intercooler, COBB Tuning Accessport ECU tuning and boost control, an aluminum radiator, and an aftermarket exhaust. The five-speed manual transmission has reportedly been rebuilt with carbon synchros and an Exedy clutch and sends power to all four wheels through ZF Design differentials. Additional modifications include 15″ Black Rhino Boxer wheels, Hella LED foglights, a 2″ lift kit, skid plates, a Yakima roof box, an aftermarket sound system, and a trailer brake controller. This Forester shows 151k miles and is now offered with partial service records, a Carfax report, and a clean Colorado title in the seller’s name.

The body is finished in white and features a hood scoop for the intercooler, clear front corner lenses, a light bar fitted with Hella LED foglights, heated side mirrors, red COBB-script side stripes, a rear receiver hitch, and roof racks outfitted with a Yakima storage box. The Carfax report lists an accident resulting in “minor” damage to the rear in January 2017. The seller notes that the bumpers have been repainted and the moonroof is inoperable. Finish flaws are shown in the gallery.

15″ Black Rhino Boxer wheels are mounted with 225/75 Goodyear Wrangler Trailrunner AT tires. The suspension has been modified with a 2″ ADF lift kit, along with an ADF brace kit, RalliTEK endlinks, and KYB GR-2 struts. The rear brake calipers and pads were replaced in September 2020.

The heated front seats are trimmed in black leather, and the cabin features a two-tone dash and door panels. Amenities include a COBB Tuning shift knob, rubber floor mats, power accessories, automatic climate control, a Viper alarm system with remote start and GPS tracking, a Sony sound system with Android connectivity, and a Tekonsha trailer brake controller. Stains and tears are evident on the seats.

Instrumentation includes a 150-mph speedometer and a tachometer with a 6,500-rpm redline. An aftermarket boost gauge has been added to the steering column, and oil pressure and temperature gauges have been fitted to the center stack. The digital odometer indicates 151k miles, approximately 11k of which have been added by the seller.

The replacement 2.5-liter STi short block flat-four was reportedly installed by COBB Tuning of Austin, Texas about 11k miles ago and has been fitted with the following components:

  • Zage turbocharger with a 16G compressor
  • Perrin turbo inlet hose
  • COBB Tuning post MAF hose
  • STi-script top-mount intercooler
  • GrimmSpeed hood scoop splitter
  • Cobb Accessport ECU tuning
  • 1050x fuel injectors
  • Four-bar MAP sensor
  • COBB Tuning SF air intake
  • COBB Tuning three-port boost control solenoid
  • COBB Tuning fuel line and fuel pressure kits
  • TheBoostCreep flex fuel tuning
  • ARP headstuds
  • COBB Tuning crank pulley
  • COBB Tuning down pipe
  • Mishimoto aluminum radiator and hoses

The five-speed manual transmission is said to have been rebuilt by ZF Design 11k miles ago and fitted with carbon synchros and an Exedy Stage 1 clutch. Power is sent to all four wheels through a ZF Design center and rebuilt rear differential. Primitive Racing skid plates have been added, and additional photos of the underside are provided in the gallery.

The Carfax report lists the aforementioned damage in 2017 along with history and registrations in California, Texas, and Colorado through its most recent update in December 2020. A walk-around video is provided below.
