BaT Auction: 1959 2.0-Liter AC Ace Engine

This 2.0-liter inline-six was removed from a 1959 AC Ace roadster owned by the seller in 2020, reportedly after having been stored since the 1980s. The engine is comprised of an aluminum block topped with a cast iron cylinder head and retains a flywheel, distributor, oil filter canister, and aluminum cam cover. This AC engine was last run prior to its removal from the donor car, and is now offered with a Massachusetts bill of sale.

The “Light Six” engine was designed by John Weller of AC in Thames-Ditton, England in 1919 and produced in varying forms for the next 43 years. The 2.0-liter powerplant featured an aluminum block and a cast iron cylinder head with an overhead-camshaft configuration. This “CL” version was reportedly destined for use in a race car prior to storage under previous ownership, though further details are unknown.

The engine retains a flywheel, oil filter canister, and distributor body in addition to an AC-branded aluminum valve cover with a removable access panel and chrome breather.

Engine number CL2190 is pictured above, and stamping “7.5/1” is said to indicate a 7.5:1 compression ratio. Additional markings can be seen in the gallery below.

The engine was removed from the seller’s 1959 AC Ace roadster approximately seven months ago, and a video showing it running prior to removal is provided above. The seller notes that the three carburetors shown in the video are not included in the sale.
