BaT Auction: 1969 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 Tribute

This 1969 Chevrolet Camaro was disassembled and refurbished in the style of a COPO ZL1 model in 2008, at which time it was refinished in Daytona Yellow over a black vinyl interior. Power is provided by a big-block V8 based on an aluminum ZL1 block produced by Schwartz Machine Company that utilizes GM Performance aluminum cylinder heads and is paired with a Muncie M-21 four-speed manual transmission and a 4.10:1 Posi-traction differential. Additional equipment includes a cowl induction hood, front and rear spoilers, 14″ steel wheels, front disc brakes, a Hurst shifter, a Holley four-barrel carburetor, and a dual exhaust system from Gardner Exhaust Systems. This COPO Camaro tribute was acquired by the seller in January 2021 and is now offered with refurbishment photos and records, engine specification documents from Schwartz Machine Company, and a clean Florida title in the seller’s name.

Originally Dover White, the body was refinished in Daytona Yellow during the refurbishment completed in 2008 during previous ownership. Equipment includes a cowl induction hood, a rear deck spoiler, a front lip spoiler, and chrome rocker panel moldings.

14″ steel wheels are finished in matching yellow and wear chrome dog-dish hubcaps along with reproduction F70-14 Goodyear Wide Tread tires with raised white letters. Braking is handled by power-assisted front discs and rear drums, and a front anti-roll bar is fitted.

The interior features high-back bucket seats upholstered in black vinyl, matching adjustable headrests, black carpets and door panels, and a black dash pad. A radio-delete panel is installed in the dash, and equipment includes a Hurst shifter, black lap belts, and black rubber floor mats.

The three-spoke steering wheel features brushed spokes and frames a 120-mph speedometer, a fuel-level gauge, and various warning lamps. The five-digit odometer shows approximately 250 miles, which is believed by the seller to be the distance traveled since the 2008 refurbishment. True mileage is unknown.

The big-block V8 is based on an aluminum ZL1 block produced by Schwartz Machine Company for GM Performance. The engine was built in 2007 using forged pistons, COMP Cams solid lifters, roller rocker arms, and aluminum GM Performance rectangular-port cylinder heads. Additional equipment includes a Holley four-barrel carburetor, chrome valve covers, a heavy-duty radiator with a curved upper neck, and a reproduction Delco-style battery.

The serial number SMC 1A7005 is said to identify this as the fifth of approximately 200 aluminum ZL1 blocks produced by Schwartz Machine Company for GM Performance, most of which were reportedly used to assemble Ram Jet ZL1 crate engines in the early-to-mid-2000s. While the factory 1969 ZL1 displaced 427ci, the recreation engines from Schwartz Machine reportedly used a longer stroke to displace 454ci.

Power is sent to the rear wheels through a Muncie M-21 four-speed manual transmission and a 12-bolt rear axle with a 4.10:1 Posi-traction differential. The dual exhaust system is a reproduction from Gardner Exhaust Systems that was fitted during the 2008 build. The seller has provided an overview and start-up video below.
