BaT Auction: 1970 Toyota Land Cruiser FJ40

This 1970 Toyota Land Cruiser was cosmetically and mechanically refurbished during prior ownership. The body was removed from the frame and refinished in Fashion Green, the glass and seals were replaced, hardware was replated, the frame was refinished in black, the seats were reupholstered with gray vinyl, and the 3.9-liter F inline-six, four-speed manual transmission, and dual-range transfer case were rebuilt. Equipment includes a body-color removable hardtop, a Warn winch, and powder-coated 15″ steel wheels with 33″ BFGoodrich tires. Acquired by the selling dealer in February 2021, this FJ40 is now offered in Oregon with photos of the work performed and a clean Colorado title.

During prior ownership the body was removed from the frame and refinished in Fashion Green with PPG Deltron paint, the glass and body seals were replaced, and hardware was replated. Features include a white-painted roof on the removable hardtop, a Warn winch mounted to the front bumper, a swing-away spare tire carrier, and a split tailgate. Paint cracks are visible on the roof, fender tops, and left-rear quarter panel as shown in the gallery below.

Factory-style 15″ wheels are powder-coated gray and wear polished hubcaps as well as 33″ BFGoodrich Mud Terrain T/A KM2 tires. Manually locking Selectro hubs are fitted up front and shown further in the gallery below.

The interior was refreshed with replacement upholstery for the split front bench and side-facing rear jump seats. A thin rubber lining covers the floors, and further additions include a tachometer and modern seat belts. An auxiliary heater is fitted for the rear occupants.

The five-digit odometer was zeroed at the time of the refurbishment and now shows just under 70 miles, with true mileage unknown. Per the selling dealer, the temperature gauge is inoperative.

The 3.9-liter F inline-six is said to have been rebuilt during the refurbishment with a .040″ overbore as well as replacement pistons, lifters, camshaft, timing components, bearings, and seals. The four-speed manual transmission, dual-range transfer case, and axles were reportedly rebuilt at that time.

The frame, suspension, and steering components were also refinished, and additional photos provided in the gallery to illustrate the underside, drivetrain, and suspension components.

Photos taken during the refurbishment are provided in the gallery. Materials accompanying the car include the stock jacking equipment and a controller for the winch. Video featuring this FJ40 is presented below.
