BaT Auction: 2000 Saab 9-3 Viggen

This 2000 Saab 9-3 Viggen is a three-door example finished in Lightning Blue over charcoal and blue leather and powered by a turbocharged 2.3-liter inline-four paired with a five-speed manual transaxle. This car was reportedly delivered to its first owner through Saab’s International and Diplomat Sales program, and was acquired by the seller in March 2020. Factory equipment includes fog lights, a power-operated sunroof, a rear spoiler, a CD player, and heated front seats, while modifications consist of 18″ three-spoke wheels, Bilstein shocks, and a Maptun cat-back exhaust system. Service completed under current ownership is said to have included replacing the valve cover gasket, engine mounts, front control arms, front struts, and brakes. This 9-3 Viggen has 75k miles and is offered with manufacturer’s literature, a set of factory Viggen wheels, a Carfax report, and a clean Georgia title in the seller’s name.

This example is one of a reported 47 hardtops finished in Lightning Blue for the US market during the 2000 model year, and features aerodynamic trim, integrated front fog lights, a sunroof, and a rear spoiler. Modifications to the exterior are limited to European headlamp lenses that were installed under current ownership. The Carfax report shows two damage incidents, and the seller states that the front bumper has been replaced, and the hood and rear bumper have been painted. Chips in the windshield are also noted.

Forged 18″ RBM Performance wheels mimic the style of Saab SVO concept-car wheels and wear 225/40 Michelin Pilot Sport All Season tires. A set of factory Viggen wheels wearing Cooper tires is included in the sale. Suspension work is said to have included the installation of Bilstein B6 shocks, Maptun springs, and replacement front struts, strut mounts, control arms, thrust arms, and sway bar links. The seller states that the rear brakes were upgraded using calipers and vented rotors from a Saab 9-5, and that the front brake pads and rotors were also replaced. A brake fluid flush was reportedly completed as part of a recent service, and the removed factory springs are included in the sale.

The cabin is equipped with heated and power-adjustable front seats trimmed in charcoal leather with blue leather inserts. Amenities include automatic climate control, power accessories, a CD player, and an information display with Night Panel function. Modifications include a Taliaferro Imports short shifter, an OEM auto-dimming rearview mirror, keyless entry, and an auxiliary input for the stereo. The seller states that the shift knob and cabin filter were replaced.

The multifunction steering wheel has been modified and re-upholstered with perforated leather accents. Instrumentation consists of a 155-mph speedometer, a tachometer, and additional gauges for boost pressure, coolant temperature, and fuel level. The odometer displays 75k miles, approximately 700 of which were added by the seller.

The turbocharged 2.3-liter inline-four has reportedly been modified with a Brew City Boost Stage 1 tune and a Maptun cat-back exhaust. Service completed under current ownership is said to have included a coolant flush, an oil change, and replacement of the spark plugs, valve cover gasket, air filter, engine mounts, and an oxygen sensor. Compression test results are presented in the gallery below.

Power is sent to the front wheels through a five-speed manual transaxle. The seller states that the car has been modified with a Taliaferro Imports steering rack brace and lower X brace. The transmission fluid is said to have been changed under current ownership.

The Carfax report indicates ‘moderate’ damage to the rear in December 2002, and ‘minor’ damage to the front in June 2015 along with history in Utah, Idaho, Illinois, and Georgia.
