BaT Auction: 1969 Ford Cobra Hardtop 428 Super Cobra Jet 4-Speed

This 1969 Ford Cobra is one of 399 hardtop examples equipped with a 428ci Super Cobra Jet V8 manufactured for the 1969 model year, and it was originally delivered to Bob Kieffe Ford of Mojave, California. The car is said to have been refurbished by Red Hills Rods & Classics of Saint George, Utah, and it was subsequently purchased by the seller in 2017. Finished in Meadowlark Yellow over a black vinyl interior, the car is equipped with a close-ratio four-speed manual transmission and a re-geared 3.25:1 rear end with a Traction-Lok limited-slip differential. Additional options include a black vinyl roof, a functional hood scoop, power front disc brakes, competition suspension, and an AM radio. This R-code Torino is now offered with an Elite Marti report and a clean Idaho title in the seller’s name.

The body has reportedly been refinished in its factory Meadowlark Yellow (W). Features include an optional black vinyl top, a functional hood scoop, chrome bumpers and trim, and Cobra badging.

Styled 14″ steel wheels with chrome trim rings are wrapped in F70 Goodyear Polyglas tires. The Cobra hardtop came equipped with a competition suspension, and optional power disc brakes are fitted up front.

The interior is trimmed in black vinyl with a matching dashboard, door panels, and carpeting. Equipment includes adjustable front headrests, lap belts, and a Philco AM radio with rear-seat speakers. The seller notes a tear in the upholstery where the driver seat folds forward, and a close-up photo of the affected area is provided in the gallery below.

A deluxe steering wheel fronts a 120-mph speedometer, an optional 6k-rpm tachometer, an auxiliary gauge cluster, and a clock. The five-digit odometer displays just under 34k miles, approximately 500 of which have been added under current ownership.

Rated by the factory to produce 360 horsepower, the 428ci Super Cobra Jet V8 is equipped with a four-barrel carburetor and features an oil cooler and an uprated crankshaft and connecting rods. The oil was changed and additional fluids were checked in August 2020. The seller notes that the idle requires adjustment.

Power is routed to the rear wheels via a Toploader close-ratio four-speed manual transmission and a 9″ rear end with 3.25:1 gearing and a Traction-Lok limited-slip differential. Additional photos of the underbody are presented in the gallery below.

The Elite Marti report includes a replica window sticker that lists included options and displays a list price of $3,993.63. Production numbers and build dates are also detailed on the report.
