BaT Auction: 1973 Honda CL450 Scrambler at No Reserve

This 1973 Honda CL450 Scrambler was acquired by the seller in 2017 and subsequently refurbished with servicing of its 444cc DOHC parallel twin as well as a repaint in blue with white and black graphics. Additional work included powder-coating the frame, reupholstering the seat, a starter rebuild, ultrasonic cleaning of the carburetors, and fitting an electronic ignition module. The bike features a five-speed transmission, both kick and electric starters, a two-up seat, chrome fenders, a high-mount exhaust system, and street lighting. This CL450K6 is offered at no reserve with a matching helmet, a sales brochure, a service manual, a stock speedometer, refurbishment photos, and a clean Illinois title in the seller’s name.

The 1973 K6 was a transitional model that featured K6-style graphics, a front drum brake, and the absence of a pilot box between the gauges. The fuel tank on this example was refinished in Candy Sapphire Blue Flake with white and black graphics, while the side covers were painted to match. The frame was powder-coated in semigloss black, various components were chrome-plated, and the two-up seat was reupholstered with a K6-style cover. New old-stock turn signals were reportedly installed along with a replacement flasher relay.

Chrome wire-spoke wheels were fitted with new spokes as well as Kenda tires measuring 100/90-19 front and 110/80-18 rear. The fork lowers were polished and clear-coated, while the chrome dual rear shocks were replaced along with the swingarm bushings. Braking is from drums with new shoes at both ends, the front of which features a twin leading-shoe design.

Instrumentation includes a dented tachometer with a 9,500-rpm redline and a replacement 130-mph speedometer with a five-digit odometer showing under 10 miles ridden since installation. Total mileage is unknown.

The air-cooled 444cc DOHC parallel twin produced 45 horsepower when new and was serviced by the seller with the following:

  • Replacement mufflers, air filters, clutch adjuster, cam followers, and rocker arms
  • Pamco electronic ignition module
  • Polished and clear-coated covers
  • New intakes and gaskets
  • Valve torque rods changed
  • Carburetors ultrasonically cleaned and synchronized

The starter is also said to have been rebuilt, though the sprag clutch slips on occasion according to the seller. Power is routed to the rear wheel through a five-speed transmission and a replacement drive chain.

A period color-matched helmet, a sales brochure, a service manual, and photos from throughout the refurbishment are included in the sale and can be viewed in the gallery below.
