BaT Auction: 1985 Mercedes-Benz 500SEC at No Reserve

This 1985 Mercedes-Benz 500SEC is finished in Smoke Silver Metallic over Medium Red leather, and it is powered by a 5.0-liter V8 mated to a four-speed automatic transmission. Equipment includes a steel sunroof, fog lights, automatic climate control, heated and power-adjustable front seats, and a Becker cassette stereo. The car was registered in Illinois and relocated to Florida in 2012, and it was acquired by the seller on BaT in May 2020. Services during current ownership have included an oil and filter change, a brake fluid flush, refurbishment to the air-conditioning system, replacement of the steering damper and alternator, and installation of four BFGoodrich tires. This C126 now shows 100k miles and is offered at no reserve with a tool kit, manufacturer’s literature, service records dating back to 1988, a clean Carfax report, and a clean Florida title in the seller’s name.

The exterior is finished in Smoke Silver Metallic (702) with gray lower body cladding and a two-tone pinstripe. Additional equipment includes a steel sunroof, fog lights, an automatic antenna, and frameless side glass. Exterior imperfections are highlighted in the gallery below, and the seller reports a partially inoperative right-side power mirror.

14″ Bundt alloy wheels are mounted with 205/70 BFGoodrich Radial T/A tires that were installed in July 2020, and a matching wheel mounted with a Dunlop SP Sport D6 tire is stored under the trunk floor. Standard equipment includes a self-leveling rear suspension and four-wheel disc brakes with an anti-lock system. Additional services in July 2020 include replacement of the steering damper and center link as well as a brake fluid flush.

The interior features power-adjustable front seats upholstered in Medium Red leather (177) with matching door panels and carpeting, a two-tone dashboard, and burl wood trim further accenting the cabin. Amenities include cruise control, automatic climate control, power windows, and a Becker Grand Prix cassette stereo. The air-conditioning system was refurbished in July 2020 with replacement of the compressor, drier, temperature switch, and a hose along with a recharge of the system. A crack is noted on the dashboard.

The four-spoke airbag steering wheel frames a 160-mph speedometer, a tachometer with an inset clock, and additional gauges displaying coolant temperature, fuel level, oil pressure, and instant fuel economy. The six-digit mechanical odometer shows 100k miles, approximately 3k of which were added by the seller. Missing pixels are noted on the exterior temperature display.

The fuel-injected 5.0L M117 V8 was factory rated at 184 horsepower and 247 lb-ft of torque, which is sent to the rear wheels through a four-speed automatic transmission. Services since May 2020 include an oil and filter change as well as replacement of the alternator and drive belts. Recent service records are provided in the gallery, and records dating to the 1980s are included in the sale as well.
