BaT Auction: 1987 Mazda RX-7 Turbo II 5-Speed at No Reserve

This 1987 Mazda RX-7 Turbo II was sold new at Metro Mazda of St. Paul, Minnesota and is powered by a turbocharged 1.3-liter Wankel rotary linked with a five-speed manual transmission. The car is finished in Dover White over red cloth and equipped with an aftermarket exhaust, a sunroof, pop-up headlights, a hood scoop, air conditioning, and a factory cassette stereo with a graphic equalizer. The seller acquired the car in 2020, and work has since included an engine rebuild as well as a replacement clutch release cylinder and shifter bushings. Now showing 149k miles, this FC Turbo II is offered at no reserve with records from the seller, factory literature, a tool kit, a clean Carfax report, and a clean North Carolina title in the seller’s name.

The exterior is finished in Dover White with black pinstripes and red “Turbo II” decals on the fenders. Features include a sunroof, pop-up headlights, a hood scoop, a power antenna, mudflaps, and a rear wiper.

Factory 16″ alloy wheels are wrapped in 225/50 Cooper Zeon RS-3 G1 tires. The rear brake calipers were repaired and the parking brake cables were replaced in March 2021. The car is equipped with Tokico shocks, and three of the wheel center caps are missing.

The seating surfaces are upholstered in red cloth with a matching dashboard, armrest, door panels, and carpets. Amenities include air conditioning, a factory cassette stereo with a graphic equalizer, cruise control, and power windows.

A leather-wrapped two-spoke steering wheel frames an 8k-rpm tachometer and a 160-mph speedometer. The six-digit mechanical odometer indicates 149k miles, around 250 of which were added by the seller.

The turbocharged 1.3-liter Wankel rotary was rebuilt and fitted with Series Five rotor housings, an RX-8 front cover gasket, HD cooling seals, and an FD RX-7 oil pressure regulator by RotorSports Racing of Kannapolis, North Carolina in March 2021. An aftermarket single-outlet exhaust, downpipe, and catalytic converter have been installed.

Power is delivered to the rear wheels via a five-speed manual transmission. The shifter bushings and clutch release cylinder have reportedly been replaced during current ownership. Additional underside photos are available in the gallery below.

The Carfax report shows no accidents or other damage and displays history in Minnesota, Arizona, and North Carolina from its first update in September 1991.
