BaT Auction: 1994 Mazda MX-5 Miata at No Reserve

This 1994 Mazda MX-5 Miata is a red over black example that was purchased by the seller in 1996 and subsequently reacquired in 2015 from his parents, who owned the car in the interim. Power is from a 1.8-liter inline-four paired with a five-speed manual transmission, and modifications include a dealer-installed air conditioning system, headrest speakers, KYB dampers, and 15″ 949 Racing wheels. The seller reports that recent service has included replacing the timing belt and water pump, radiator and hoses, and brake pads and rotors in addition to an oil change performed in preparation for the sale. This NA Miata shows 93k miles and is offered at no reserve with a spare wheel, partial service records, an owner’s manual, a clean Carfax report, and a clean Ohio title in the seller’s name.

The car is finished in Classic Red (SU), and the seller reports that the rocker panels have been repainted in black to correct chipping. The seller has provided close-up pictures of body-panel VIN stickers and noted blemishes including a cracked wiper cowl in the image gallery, which also shows the retractable headlamps both illuminated and closed.

Alloy 15″ 949 Racing wheels are a darker shade on the passenger-side, and 195/50 Hankook Ventus V2 Concept 2 tires are mounted all around. The seller states that the brake pads and rotors were replaced within the last five years, and KYB Excel GR2 dampers and replacement springs were fitted in July 2019. The black convertible top is said to be an older replacement featuring a glass backlight, and it shows a failing patch near the rear window zipper. A convertible boot and car cover are included in the sale.

Grey cloth seats with headrest speakers were installed by the seller, and an air conditioning system was reportedly added in the mid-1990’s. Black carpets are protected with Miata-script floor mats, and additional equipment includes cupholders, a wood shift knob, and stainless steel sill plates.

The four-spoke steering wheel frames black gauges with bright bezels including a tachometer with a 7,000-rpm redline, a 140-mph speedometer, and a six-digit odometer showing 93k miles, approximately 75k of which have been added during the seller’s two periods of ownership.

The 1.8-liter DOHC inline-four was factory rated at 128 horsepower with 110 lb-ft of torque. The seller states that service during his most recent six years of ownership has included replacing the timing belt, water pump, radiator, cooling hoses, and clutch hydraulic cylinders in addition to fluids and filters. An oil change was performed in preparation for the sale.

A five-speed manual transmission sends power to the rear wheels. A video of the undercarriage is provided above, and additional pictures of the suspension are included in the gallery below.

Partial service records are included in the sale, as is an owner’s manual.

The Carfax report lists an accident-free history with registration events and service visits in Ohio.
