BaT Auction: 440-Powered 1965 Plymouth Satellite Coupe

This 1965 Plymouth Satellite hardtop coupe is powered by a non-original 440ci V8 that is paired with a TorqueFlite three-speed automatic transmission and a Ford 9″ rear end. According to the selling dealer, the current owner purchased the car in the early 2000s from the original owner in Colorado and subsequently refurbished the vehicle and had the replacement drivetrain installed. Repainted in red over a reupholstered two-tone red interior, the car features a four-barrel carburetor fitted to an Edelbrock intake, disc brakes, a B&M shifter, a console-mounted tachometer, and Cragar wheels. This Belvedere Satellite is now offered on dealer consignment with a clean New Mexico title in the owner’s name.

The first-generation Satellite was introduced in 1965 and subsequently restyled in 1966, and approximately 23k examples were manufactured in this hardtop body style. This car is said to have been refinished in red during the mid-2000s refurbishment. Exterior features include chrome bumpers and trim, bright rocker panels, chrome accents on the quarter panels, a driver-side mirror, and dual exhaust exits.

Chrome-finished Cragar SS wheels are wrapped in Mickey Thompson Sportsman S/R tires. Power-assisted disc brakes are fitted all around.

The interior has been reupholstered in red vinyl with maroon inserts and white piping over matching door panels, maroon carpeting, and a red dashboard. Amenities include retractable front lap belts, an added B&M shifter, a heater/defroster, variable-speed windshield wipers, and a Plymouth Transaudio AM radio.

A red two-spoke steering wheel fronts a 120-mph speedometer and auxiliary gauges. Auto Gage oil-pressure and water-temperature gauges have been mounted under the dashboard below the radio, and a 7k-rpm tachometer is fitted to the center console. The five-digit odometer shows 29k miles, approximately 1k of which have been added post-refurbishment; true mileage is unknown.

Originally equipped with a 318ci V8, the car now has a 440ci V8 said to have been built by Gates Racing of Grand Junction, Colorado. Features include Gates valve covers, an Edelbrock Performer intake manifold with a four-barrel carburetor, and MSD electronic ignition. The engine was reportedly tuned 1k miles ago, and the seller notes that the battery does not hold a charge well.

Power is routed to the rear wheels via a TorqueFlite three-speed automatic transmission through a Ford 9″ rear end. Southside Machine Co. traction bars are paired with rear leaf springs. Additional photos of the underbody are provided in the gallery below.
