BaT Auction: Twin-Plug 3.6L-Powered 1970 Porsche 914-6

This 1970 Porsche 914-6 was modified by its previous owner around a decade ago before being acquired by the seller out of California in 2013. Finished in red over black vinyl, the car is powered by a 3.6-liter flat-six that was reportedly sourced from a 964 and fitted with Electromotive twin-plug ignition, Web camshafts, and dual 50mm PMO carburetors. Steel GT-style fender flares and a composite hood and rear decklid have also been added, and additional equipment includes a 901 five-speed manual transaxle, a Quaife limited-slip differential, a fuel cell, front-mounted oil cooler, 911SC-sourced front suspension, 17” multi-piece Kinesis wheels, and upgraded four-wheel disc brakes. Recent maintenance has consisted of a carburetor adjustment along with an oil change and replacement spark plugs. This modified 914-6 is being offered with a 1971 Porsche 914 parts car, a Porsche Certificate of Authenticity, a tool kit, records from the build, the removed long block and assorted parts, and clean Texas titles for the 914-6 as well as the parts car in the seller’s name.

Factory-finished in Irish Green (213), the exterior was fitted with metal GT-style fender flares as well as a composite rear decklid and hood prior to a repaint in red during prior ownership. Additional features include body-colored bumpers, side skirts, front and rear spoilers, and a custom lower rear valance, along with hood pins, a front fuel filler, 914-6 badging, front fog lamps, pop-up headlights, and twin exhaust outlets. The seller notes that various rock chips have been repaired.

The polished 17” multi-piece Kinesis wheels are wrapped in Goodyear Eagle F1 tires, and stopping power is provided by cross-drilled four-wheel discs paired with red Porsche-branded monoblock calipers and Pagid brake pads. Boxed rear trailing arms, 911SC-spec front suspension, and a chassis stiffening kit have reportedly been installed, and additional suspension modifications are said to include the following:

  • Front and rear sway bars
  • 23mm front torsion bars
  • 930-spec tie rods
  • Polygraphite suspension bushings
  • Bilstein front shock absorbers
  • Eibach rear coilovers
  • Monoball upper strut mounts

The cabin features black vinyl fixed-back bucket seats fitted with Bell harnesses along with a matching dashboard, door panels, and carpets. Additional equipment includes a Momo shift knob, a fire extinguisher, red Sparco door pulls, and Rennline aluminum footrests. The seller notes that the removed seats are included in the sale.

A leather-wrapped Momo Prototipo steering wheel frames a centrally-mounted aftermarket 10k-rpm tachometer, a 150-mph speedometer, and a combination gauge. The five-digit odometer shows just over 8k miles, though total mileage is unknown.

The 3.6-liter flat-six was reportedly sourced from a 964 911 and has been fitted with an Electromotive twin-plug ignition system and dual 50mm PMO carburetors. Additional features are said to include a front-mounted fuel cell and oil cooler, Web camshafts, upgraded valve springs, a Patrick Motorsports muffler, and Jet-Hot coated headers. Recent maintenance included a carburetor adjustment, an oil change, and replacement of the spark plugs. The removed long block is included in the sale.

Power is sent to the rear wheels through a side-shift Porsche 901 five-speed manual transaxle with a 904 main shaft and a Quaife limited-slip differential. Additional equipment consists of shorter gearing, a Patrick Motorsports lightweight clutch and aluminum flywheel, solid transmission mounts, and a billet aluminum intermediate plate.

The car was issued a replacement identification plate by the state of California, and VIN 9140431029 matches the number listed on the CoA below.

The included Porsche Certificate of Authenticity shows the factory colors, options, and identification numbers.

A non-running 1971 Porsche 914 (VIN#: 4712914160) is also included in the sale as a parts car if the winning bidder so desires.
