This 1974 Volkswagen Type 181 was acquired by the seller from Oregon in June 2020, and was subsequently refinished in orange and white over new black vinyl interior upholstery. Power is from a replacement 1.6-liter flat-four paired with a four-speed manual transaxle. Additional work under current ownership included refurbishment of the removable hardtop, steel wheels, and rear axles in addition to replacement of brake and suspension components, the carburetor, engine and body seals, the clutch, and exterior lighting. This Thing is offered with a clean Washington State title in the seller’s name.
The body was refinished in Pumpkin Orange with white rocker panels and bumpers under current ownership. The removable hardtop was coated with white bed liner, and the seals for the trunk and engine lids were changed. Replacement lighting includes the taillight and front turn signal lenses as well as the headlamps. A set of side curtains is included in the sale and shown mounted in the gallery below.
Steel wheels were refinished in black with chrome hubcaps and wear 205/70 General whitewall tires. An additional set of white hubcaps will accompany the car according to the seller. A replacement spare wheel and tire is housed in the front trunk. The steering damper, ball joints, tie rod ends, and shocks were changed, while brake work included a fluid flush as well as installation of new shoes and wheel cylinders. An alignment was performed following the suspension and brake work according to the seller.
The cabin features low-backed bucket seats up front as well as a fold-down rear bench, all of which have been fitted with replacement padding and black vinyl upholstery. Checkerplate-style black rubber mats protect the floors and additional refurbishment work included rebuilding the windshield wiper motor as well as replacing the foot pedals covers, a hood release pull-handle, and fuel filler hoses.
The body-colored steel dashboard houses a 100-mph speedometer with a five-digit odometer showing 8k miles, approximately 300 of which have been added by the seller. Total mileage is unknown.
The replacement air-cooled 1.6L flat-four is fed by a Solex carburetor with an open-element air cleaner. The engine is said to have been fitted with new rear main, valve cover, intake manifold, exhaust, and oil cooler seals by the seller, who also repainted the tins and fan shroud. The valve clearances were adjusted and the battery was replaced along with the distributor cap and rotor, spark plugs, ignition wires, and fan belt.
Power is routed through a four-speed manual transaxle that was reportedly serviced with a new clutch, pressure plate, throwout bearing, and axle boots. The floor pans are said to have been replaced under previous ownership.
