BaT Auction: 1989 Mercedes-Benz 560SL

This 1989 Mercedes-Benz 560SL is finished in Pearl Gray over Gray leather and is powered by a 5.5-liter V8 paired with a four-speed automatic transmission. Equipment includes a black soft top, a body-colored removable hardtop, 15″ alloy wheels, cruise control, power windows, and automatic climate control. The car spent much of its life in California and Arizona before being relocated to Massachusetts in 2020 and subsequently acquired by the selling dealer. Servicing is said to have since included an oil change as well as replacement of the tires, soft top, and fuel pump. This R107 shows 35k miles and is offered in New York with manufacturer’s literature, a stamped service booklet, an accident-free Carfax report, and a clean Massachusetts title.

The car left the factory finished in Pearl Gray (122) and is believed to have been repainted under previous ownership. Exterior details include black side moldings, chrome-accented bumpers and trim, a body-colored removable hardtop, fog lights, and a replacement black soft top. Body-panel VIN tags are shown up close in the image gallery below.

Gullideckel 15″ alloy wheels were reportedly refinished under current ownership and mounted with 205/65 Vredestein Quatrac-5 tires. A full-size spare with an older Pirelli tire is housed in the trunk. The car is equipped with four-wheel independent suspension as well as anti-lock disc brakes.

The cabin is upholstered in Gray leather (278) with matching carpets and door panels as well as burl wood trim accenting the dashboard and center console. Features include central locking, cruise control, power windows, automatic climate control, and a locking glovebox. The seller notes the Becker stereo is inoperative.

Instrumentation consists of a 170-mph speedometer, a tachometer with a 6k-rpm redline, and auxiliary gauges. The odometer shows 35k miles, about 200 of which were added by the selling dealer. The Carfax report notes a mileage inconsistency in an entry dated August 2020.

The 5.5-liter M117 V8 features Bosch electronic fuel injection and produced 227 horsepower and 279 lb-ft of torque when new. Power is sent to the rear wheels through a four-speed automatic transmission. The selling dealer states that an oil change and fuel pump replacement were performed under current ownership.

Additional photos of the underside are provided in the gallery.

Manufacturer’s literature including owner’s manuals, a dealership directory, and a stamped service booklet are included in the sale.

The Carfax report shows no accidents or other damage and lists the aforementioned mileage inconsistency as well as history in California, Arizona, and Massachusetts from the first entry in December 1990 through the most recent update in January 2021.
