BaT Auction: 1997 Toyota Land Cruiser FZJ80

This 1997 Toyota Land Cruiser is finished in Desert Dune Metallic and Moonglow Pearl over an Oak leather interior, and is powered by a 4.5-liter 1FZ-FE inline-six paired with a four-speed automatic transmission and a dual-range transfer case with a locking center differential. Equipment includes an ARB front bumper and bull bar, Old Man Emu springs and dampers, custom rock sliders and underbody armor, a spare tire leveling kit, and a CB radio. The seller reports that service since 2016 has included replacement of cooling system hoses, installation of a Borla cat-back exhaust system and a rear heater bypass, as well as replacement of front brake pads and accessory drive belts in preparation for the sale. This FZJ80 is offered with service records, its removed front bumper, Thule roof bars, a clean Carfax report, and a clean New Jersey title in the seller’s name.

The body is finished in Desert Dune Metallic with Moonglow Pearl on the fender flares and lower bodywork, and it is believed that the vehicle was specified without roof rails, a tailgate spoiler, or running boards. The seller states that the right front of the vehicle was repaired and the windshield was replaced during previous ownership. An ARB front bumper with a bull bar and removable CB antenna has been fitted, as have custom-fabricated rock sliders and a rear receiver hitch. Blemishes include spots of rust inside the right-front and left-rear wheel arches, and the seller states that the power antenna does not retract.

Factory 16″ alloy wheels show wear in the finish and are wrapped in 285/75 Goodyear Wrangler Duratrac all-terrain tires, which were mounted in 2013. The front Birfield joints were rebuilt and installed with new wheel bearings at 78k miles in 2012, and the front brake pads were replaced in preparation for the sale. An Old Man Emu suspension kit with stock-height springs was installed in 2009 along with Nitrocharger shocks and an Old Man Emu steering stabilizer. The seller states that the vehicle is driven seasonally and garaged when not in use.

The Oak interior trim features seats upholstered in beige leather with darker brown plastics, trim, and carpets. Tan seat covers are fitted for the driver, and all-weather mats are present for the first two rows. Additional equipment includes power-adjustable front seats, air conditioning, automatic climate control, dual airbags, a center storage console, a power-operated sunroof, an aftermarket inclinometer, a Cobra 19-channel CB radio, and an AM/FM radio with CD and cassette players. The rear cabin heater has been bypassed.

Instruments include a tachometer and a 130-mph speedometer along with auxiliary gauges. The six-digit mechanical odometer shows 109k miles, approximately 59k of which have been added by the seller in 14 years. The seller states that the “D” shift indicator light in the instrument cluster does not illuminate.

Tandem jump seats are stored against the sides in the rear cargo area, which also houses a bottle jack, a tool pouch, and a carpeted floor mat.

The 4.5-liter 1FZ-FE inline-six features dual overhead camshafts with four valves per cylinder and was factory rated at 212 horsepower and 275 lb-ft of torque. The head gasket and fuel injectors were replaced in 2006, and service under current ownership is said to have included the following:

  • 2014 – Replacement fuel filter and ignition tune-up
  • 2016 – Magnaflow Y-pipe and catalytic converters
  • 2017 – Brake fluid flush
  • 2019 – New radiator hoses and clamps, Pesky heater hose, new thermostat and radiator cap, coolant exchange with red Toyota coolant
  • 2020 – Installation of Borla stainless steel cat-back exhaust with new hanger bushings
  • 2021 – New accessory drive belts

Power is sent to the solid front and rear axles through a four-speed automatic transmission and full-time dual-range transfer case with a locking center differential. A Slee Offroad skidplate protects the transfer case, and the spare tire carrier has been adjusted for additional ground clearance with a custom-fabricated leveling kit.

Partial service records from previous ownership will accompany the truck in addition to the seller’s records since 2006, an owner’s manual, a removed factory replacement front bumper, and a set of Thule roof bars.

The Carfax report lists an accident-free history with service visits and registration events in Minnesota and New Jersey.
