BaT Auction: 21-Years-Owned Turbocharged Twin-Plug 1973 Porsche 914 Race Car

This 1973 Porsche 914 was acquired by the seller approximately 21 years ago and subsequently modified for use in PCA club events in the GT3 class. Power is from a 2.0-liter twin-plug flat-six fitted with a Garrett T4/T5 turbo, 9:1 compression Pauter pistons, Biral aluminum-finned cylinders, and Carrillo connecting rods. The GT2-style fiberglass bodywork is finished in red and mounted to a stitch-welded chassis with a full roll cage, and additional equipment includes a side-shifter inverted G50 five-speed manual transaxle, a Guard limited-slip differential, an adjustable rear spoiler and front splitter, a Recaro bucket seat with head restraints, 16” BBS wheels mounted with Hoosier slicks, and JRZ adjustable coilovers. The car has reportedly been stored for the last decade and was recently serviced with new spark plugs, an oil change, and a fuel injector cleaning. This 914 racer is now being offered on a bill of sale in Vero Beach, Florida with a spare set of wheels.

The car features removable SCCA GT2-style fiberglass bodywork sourced from Roger Sheridan and finished in a Porsche 917 Salzburg-style red and white livery with #28 meatballs on the hood, decklid, and doors. The chassis has been seam-welded, and additional features include a one-piece cowl in place of the windshield, a ducted hood and rear decklid secured with pins, adjustable chassis-mounted rear spoiler, carbon fiber front splitter, a black-painted rear bumper, and a rear panel that has been drilled for intercooler ventilation.

The 16” BBS wheels measure 10” wide up front and 11” wide out back and are mounted with white-letter Hoosier slicks. Stopping power is provided by 930-sourced discs and calipers with floating rotors up front, and a spare set of wheels is included in the sale. Suspension modifications are said to include the following:

  • JRZ three-way adjustable coilovers with external reservoirs
  • Heim-joint ERP front suspension with adjustable control arms
  • Adjustable front camber boxes
  • Raised rear pick-up points
  • Monoball trailing arm pivots

The cabin has been media blasted, painted gray, and fitted with a full roll cage with door bars by Hamfab, Inc., a Recaro fixed bucket seat equipped with a Schroth harness, a top-mounted Tilton pedal assembly, Lifeline fire suppression system, and a 17-gallon Fuel Safe fuel cell mounted in the passenger floor.

A three-spoke Alcantara-wrapped Personal steering wheel sits ahead of a carbon fiber instrument panel housing a suite of AutoMeter instrumentation including a central 9k-rpm tachometer and auxiliary gauges. An AEM boost gauge is installed, along with toggle switches for vehicle functions and a Tilton brake-bias adjuster. No odometer is fitted, thus total mileage is unknown.

The 2.0-liter flat-six was sourced from a Porsche 911 and features a twin-plug conversion, a 1968 sand-cast aluminum case, Biral cylinders, and a Garrett hybrid T4/T5 turbocharger. Additional equipment includes the following components:

  • Billy Boat 930-spec oil cooler
  • 3.2 Carrera intake plenum with integrated 55-lb Siemens fuel injectors
  • Twin Bosch 044 fuel pumps
  • 9:1 compression Pauter pistons
  • Carrillo connecting rods
  • Camshaft-driven turbo scavenge pump
  • 930-spec oil pump

The inverted G50 five-speed manual transaxle has been fitted with a California Motorsports side-shift conversion, along with a custom flywheel with twin 7.25” clutch discs and a front-mounted transmission oil cooler. Power is sent to the rear wheels through a Guard limited-slip differential and 300M half-shafts with 930-spec CV joints. Additional underbody photos are provided in the gallery below, along with three dyno graphs that display readings of 392-horsepower and 312 lb-ft of torque at 15 psi of boost, 444-horsepower and 352 lb-ft of torque at 20 psi, and 473-horsepower and 382 lb-ft of torque at 23 psi.
