BaT Auction: 26-Years-Owned 1959 Mercedes-Benz 220S 4-Speed

This 1959 Mercedes-Benz 220S was first delivered in Germany before it was imported to the US, and it was acquired by the seller from the original owner’s daughter in 1995. Work performed between 2014-2015 included rebuilding the 2.2-liter M180 inline-six and four-speed column-shifted manual transmission as well as overhauls of the wiring, suspension, steering, and braking systems. The car is finished in black over brown upholstery, and equipment includes 13″ steel wheels with covers, a fold-back cloth sunroof, and an Alpine cassette stereo and CD changer. This 220S is now offered with manufacturer’s literature, service records, four additional wheel covers, photos documenting the overhaul of the powertrain, and a clean Washington title in the seller’s name.

The exterior was refinished in black during prior ownership and features a fold-back cloth sunroof. Paint chips and scratches are noted by the seller along with a rust bubble and chipped paint on the left-rear door. Close-up photos of the paint and trim can be viewed in the gallery below.

13″ steel wheels wear covers with body-colored accents and older BFGoodrich Silvertown whitewall tires. The front wheel covers are later-style replacements items, and four additional wheel covers are included in the sale. The braking, steering, and suspension systems were reportedly rebuilt by the seller, and the steering stabilizer shock is said to be in need of replacement.

The cabin is trimmed in brown with contrasting black carpets. Equipment includes hand-crank windows, front lap belts, and an Alpine cassette stereo connected to CD changer located in the trunk and aftermarket speakers mounted in the front doors. The rear bench seat has been re-upholstered, the trim on the dashboard shows signs of deterioration, and the driver’s seat upholstery is cracked.

The ivory-colored two-spoke steering wheel fronts a horizontal-sweep 110-mph speedometer and gauges for coolant temperature, oil pressure, and fuel level. The five-digit odometer is said to have rolled over and now shows under 13k miles, 5k of which were added by the seller. Total mileage is unknown.

The 2.2-liter M180 inline-six was rebuilt in 2015, which included replacement of the timing chain, pistons, valves, valve springs and guides, rod bushings, and gaskets. The dual Solex carburetors were rebuilt and the electrical wiring was also replaced. According to the seller, a coolant panel on the right side of the engine was replaced in 2019.

The data plate shows chassis number 180-011-10-9505226, and the VIN listed on the title is 9505226. Decoding the chassis number yields the following information:

  • 180 – Type W180
  • 011 – Sliding sunroof
  • 10 – Left-hand drive, standard transmission
  • 95 – 1959 production year
  • 5226 – The 5,226th W180 off the line in 1959

Power is sent to the rear wheels through a column-shifted four-speed manual transmission that was also rebuilt and fitted with replacement clutch components in 2015. According to the seller, the transmission occasionally pops out of fourth gear under heavy acceleration. A section of the exhaust piping was replaced in 2016, and additional underside images can be viewed in the gallery.

Photos and records documenting the overhaul of the powertrain have been placed in the gallery.

The car is supplied with manufacturer’s literature and receipts for work completed during current ownership.
